91 Auto G/box selector problem

Howdy

Sorry if this has been covered before but i can't access the search function.

I have a 91 Maxima with the factory automatic transmission. The transmission itself works fine but more often than not will not engage drive when moving from Park/Reverse into Drive. To do so I have to tap the shifter further down towards second for it to engage, so i assume it is a problem with the linkage.
Unfortunately i know nothing about the mechanics of the Maxima so dont know where to start. Does it actually have a mechanical linkage between the selector and the gearbox, and if so can this be adjusted?
Is this a common problem with Maxima's?

Thanks.

Thanks for that Chris. Can this bushing be accessed from inside the vehicle by removing the panel around the selector or is it accessed from underneath??

TIA.
