No dash lights

92SE 3.0 DOHC.

2 nights ago....dash lights would only illuminate at night, when I applied pressure to the brake.

Last night - Dash lights dont come on at all. Brake lights work ok...however i have not checked the rear running lights at this stage...mentioned in other posts.

Searched a few posts, and some were successful with changing the fuses....others changing wires behind the center dash area...

Just wondering which fuses to look at? Pull them all? Nothing on the fuse panel, relates to the dash lights...or am I totally missing something here.

Thanks in advance for any help.

check your back light fuse, that usally is the culprit. Yes the brake light will come on but with no dash lights you will have no running rear lights.

Ok.....so it seems as if it was not a permanent fix. Same problem happened again, within about 1 week. Replaced fuse, and then it happened again, within 1 day. Do I have a short somewhere? All 3 times...the same fuse is blown!

I can tell the problem is going to happen, as wierd things start to happen. My dashlights will turn on when I put my foot on the brake pedal (even when headlights are not turned on).

Any help would be great.

Thanks

you need to go thru the taillight wiring and see if you can find a short somewhere, even if you cant wrap some of the wires in electrical type to see if you're covering one you can't find..

DO NOT REPLACE THE FUSE WITH A HIGHER RATED FUSE..this is exactly how I shorted out my TCU (Time Control Unit)..

In other news I dropped my TCU tonight and resoldered some of the connections and dash lights rule...once again, it's been a while since I've seen my SE gauges lit up at night..

I just had the exact same problem. Have you checked the combo tail/stop light bulbs? Apparently one of the filaments had broken but was making contact with the other filament's connector? The bulb still lit up so I did'nt even think to check it until someone mentioned checking the wiring to see if it was melted and happened to see it.

Should I cut away the insulation tape from the wires that are already wrapped? I ask because, I noticed that most of it is wrapped....and then it runs into a plastic conduit that feeds out of the trunk area. I had a look at the exposed wires that feed into the tail-lights, and everything seemed ok. However once again, I didnt cut any of the existing insulation, to check for bare wire. Should I pull off all the side plastics/molding in the trunk, to get at all the cable routing? Also, is there anywhere to check under the dash for bare wire? Sorry...just a newbie at this. Didnt know how extensive others have had to be in trying to fix this problem.

PS - When the taillight fuse is replaced, and the car is not running, the shiftlock on the autotranny clicks everytime I turn the lights on...........until the fuse blows....didnt know if this was normal or not...just thought I would add it.

Also, I checked the bulbs, and they are ok.

If I do have to have this fixed by a professional, is it best to take the car to a Nissan dealership? Or maybe find a local mechanic that works on japanese cars?

Thanks for any suggestions.

........also after a little more testing...

I found the problem only seems to happen, after I give the car a little gas. When the car is turned off the fuse never blows...when the car is idle, it doesnt seem to happen...however once I give it a little gas in neutral, and get the revs over 1k, it blows immediately.

I have a similar problem....my dash lights would flicker when I turned the car on for about 5 min while in idle or driving. Last night all my dash lights died while I was driving home from work. I'm going to replace the fuse tomorrow and see what happens...if it doesn't work I'll let you know what else is done to get it working again. Good luck
