cv boot..
well I had duck taped and zip tied my cv boot because i had noticed it had a little rip in it and it had just started tossin grease from the boot....so i caught it maybe 1 week after the boot had finally ripped.....today I heard this wierd kinda sound from the front left(the ducktaped boot) its no metal at all, really hard to describe. but it does not sound like any grinding or anything...I onl hear it when im turning....my question is.. should i be ok with repacking with grease and just putting a new boot on,... or is it too late and are my wheel bearing going to need to be replaced? I had the car in the air a month or so ago, and i tried to wiggle the tires back and forth to see how the bearing were...the front left(same cv ducktape boot) was the only the seemed to have any play, and it was very very minimal.... I should probably check now and see if its the same or not...if I should replace the wheel bearings and boot and anything else that needs change...about how much in parts would I be looking at, and how tough of a job is it to replace the wheel bearings as well?
too late, the sound you're probably trying to describe is a clicking. The joints already have dirt in them. Right now, it's almost cheaper to get a whole rebuilt axle than just having the cv joint repaired. I recently had mine done, and paid $52 ea for 2 axles. Bearings are pretty cheap around $15.

its not a clicking sound.....it almost sounds as if i zip tied the duck tape too tight and as im turning it pulls stress on the zip tie/duck tape, caussing this sound...it almost sounds like a pencil eraser, like the duck tape is gripping, then slipping then gripping then slipin....
why would I have to get a new axle? wouldn't my bearings just be bad if anything?

No, if the boot is ripped, dirt and moisture get into the joint. The cv joint isn't a bearing, it's more like a u-joint. And as for why a new axle, if you continue to drive around on it, it will lock up or break. And if the joint breaks, your axle swings around and causes all sorts of damage.
There's 2 ways to fix it
1. tear apart the joint, and replace alot of the components.
2. have the whole axle replaced.
it used to be really expensive to have the axle replaced. But now, the cost for axles have come down so much, it's like $20 more just to replace the whole axle, instead of having the joint repaired.
Trust me, it'll save time and headache, but if you don't mind being without a car for awhile, and you want to learn something new, you can try getting a cv-joint kit and repairing it yourself, but it's a pain.

id rather not **** with the axles, i am dreaming of putting a 5spd in it anyways, not sure if i need to axles from a 5spd or if my auto will work, i forget. So what would be the chances of my axle locking up or whatever....and if I went in it within the next 2 weeks and took off the boot and cleaned everything and repacked it with grease, I should be ok right? there cant possibly be any damage done to my axle, the boot had JUST gotten the small hole in it, and has never showed any signs of clicking or grinding............ but for my future refernce, I did my right cv boot a few months ago because it had been ripped for i dont know how long but all the grease seemed to be on the wheel well and not in the boot, i replaced the boot and repacked, and that one has never made noise and has been fine since. it took me and my mechanic maybe 1 hour to do everything to replace the cv boot....how long would it take me to replace just the left axle if i buy it complete? and is it easier or harder than doing just the cv boot?
sorry I drag on, it sounds diff in my head

internetautomar - I'm needing the front axles as well, but I can't seem to find them on your website.
Please send me a link to them. daldridge24@yahoo.com
Thanks
Dave

as I've said a few times before, the axles are $55 plus shipping plus core (which varies by axle) so it really isn't worth it to sell them.
and I've never listed them on my page because there are too many options and too many chances of the wrong part going out.

after outsearching places besides Schmucks. I found Baxter auto parts has the axle I need for $59.95 and a $50 core charge. Otherwise I woulda been ordering through automart. Thanks for the help brian...
..also, Brian, I have dohc auto, without ABS, with LSD, is there anyway you can get me a part number for the gasket, or seal(output shaft seal?) im going to need to replace for my front left axle? When I put my pulley on the dealer gave me the wrong seal. I just want to be sure this time...if not, no biggie. Thanks again

I don't do labor. At least not mechanical.
