Car Stutters

Mom has a 92 Max with about 124K on her, car stutters on accelleration, in park as well as in drive

It does it at low rpms but when you rev it past about 2k it runs smooth, it idles fine as well

if i bring the rpms up slowly it doesnt do it, I did notice under the hood on the drivers side next to the intake manifold there is a gold thing, looks like a fuel pressure regulator, when the car stutters there is a shaft that moves, looks like its causing it to stutter, however i tried holding it so it wouldn't move it still stuttered a bit.

Also there is a faint smell of raw gas from under the hood,
any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA
Sam

Does the car have a miss? It seems like itdoes from you description. Listen to the exhaust by the muffler and see if it is a smooth sound or if you hear a popping sound from it.

My car had that same studder when one of the cylinders died. Mine was dead because of a fuel injector but it can be from a number of things. First lets determine what the studder is and then we can tell you how to find what is causing it.

Dealership is saying its the Mass Air Flow Meter gonna be about 790 bucks found the part online for about 370

Does this sound like it could be the culprit, if so how easy is it to replace. I dont have a Chiltons manual for this car.

Mass Air Flow Sensor:
ALL:74-10014 $165.00 + $30 Core

it's very easy to replace, find your airfilter and it screwed / bolted to the cover.

disconnect the MAF and see how it runs.
if the maf is disconnected and it idles fine, then the MAF is a problem.
with the MAF disconnected it will not go above 2000 RPM so you can't really drive with it disconnected.

Alpi's theory of it actually being a miss is rather sound.
the best way in my opinion to check for a miss is too pull the plug wires one at a time until you find which cylinder DOESN'T change the way the engine runs. if you find one then that is the cylinder which is causing problems.

and injectors are much more common to fail on these cars than MAFs

Its good as long as the stutter comes from car. Why, they always tease me the shipmate...

May be distributor cap, wires, TPS. Go through all (=all) connectors, clean.

Read this web site info through...

I would try the above by testing the MAF and injectors. On my dads 91, his sputtering and really rough running engine was caused by the MAF. His car would start, sputter, then die. MAF failures aren't as common as a Fuel Injector problem so I would recommend doing the above test before buying a $700 item and still having the same problem.

I kept hearing a tap tap tap, #3 spark plug is arcing on intake manifold.. looks like the 4th of july in there...

Never the less imma head to the dealership to try to get the diagnostic fee back plus the price i paid for the maf sensor, got it for 229 at an auto parts store local.

Thanks guys for all your help

Stealership agreed to replace the diagnostic fee, they give some spill about it threw a code and the MAF had an internal short, I call BS b/c there was no CEL on or flashed.

Also I really belive if they had put the MAF sensor on the problem remained they would have replaced the wire and charged for the MAF anyways when this was not the problem, NIssan said that if they had put the Sensor on and the prolbem remained they say they wouldnt have...LIARS if it threw a code it shouldnt have been a question about it not working...

I read an earlier post that nissan has a tendency to replcace parts until the problem is fixed..i concur.

Any one have a number i can complain to? Address or anything

Im not letting them off the hook that easy, im determined to get refunded for the MAF
