Exhaust flex thingie problem... Help! :-)

hey!

My 93 GXE has an exhaust leak, and I have been told its in a flex joint.

What is my best option here? Wrap it up with exhaust tape? Replace the Y-Pipe?

I like my repairs like I like my women: cheap and easy... so lets hear some suggestions!

TIA!

Good chance at a performance upgrade as stated. Or you can have a shop cut/weld in a new flex section. That will probably cost about the same w/o any perfomance benefits

My estimates for fixing a flex pipe was about $85-$95 between the 3 shops. I new pipe would cost at least another $100 above that. At this age, its probably your best bet to by a new Hi-Po Y-pipe, get gains, and not having to worry about the pipe rusting through after a couple years.

If your bolts aren't rusted together, its an easy process. Otherwise you're going to need a blow torch to get them off. The installation process is reverse and the easy part.

cheaest way is to get a muffler shop to weld in a new flex section. PERIOD.

Brian, you are too cheap sometimes.

Hornswoggler, if your flex section is rusted, odds are other parts of the y-pipe are rusted, too. Maybe it would be cheaper in the short term to just weld in a new flex section, but I think the long term benefits of a new y-pipe would be greater.

For about $100 more, you can have a performance enhancing y-pipe that is all new, with no old pieces to worry about rusting through. You will get a few more mpg (at least I did) and it one of the few bolt on mods you can do to your car that you will notice performance-wise.
