The Bendix Blues, Starter Problems

The Bendix Blues, Starter Problems
The starter on my 94 max se is going. When I turn the key I can hear the starter running but it won't engage. It will usually start on the third try (secound try it grinds a little). I suspect the Bendix is sticking a little. My options are to remove the starter and clean/silicon the Bendix and hope the brushes don't go out soon or spend $190 dollas for a new starter. The car has 122K on it. what do you guys think?
I also was wondering about the Chilton Manuals for the 94 VE. Why are they grouped with the 4th gens? I found chiltons that are either 89-92 or 93-98! thats wierd since there is 92s with VE and 93s with VG.
If you think in should just get a new starter, which brand and where is the best for online purchases. Napa in town can get a Bosch for $190, that is after I return my old one. Will internet prices beat that including shipping for new one, and shipping back the old one for core charge?

mine went out on an older starter. i think mine wasn't repairable but luckily i had a starter from a vg30det sitting around that bolted up and works (more or less).
brian (internetautomar) probably sells starters and at a good price if he does.

First check your battery terminal connections.
Matt93se has mentioned the battery or battery connection in the past, and I'm 99% sure that is why I have a similar problem. I recently changed my battery, but my terminals were both badly corroded and FUBAR when I broke them free. My starter was fine before the swap, but now grinds sometimes when I try to start the car because 1) it's even colder out now 2) the starter isn't getting enough juice (apparently it takes a lot).
My car's been sitting around lately, but I'll be replacing the terminals this weekend.

Its is a brand new battery, terminals are perfectly clean. I went to Napa today and picked up a new starter. I replaced the thing in 30 mins, install was extremely easy. I took the old starter apart, brushes were hardly worn at all but the actuator was getting pretty bad, and that bendix was getting tired. I am glad I just went ahead and replaced it. Thanks guys
