Need electronic starter system diagram

Does anyone know where i can find or have a picture or pdf of the starter system diagram? like what wire is what and were it goes for a 1990 gxe. is it in the repair manual? i dont know if i wanna buy that yet. my problem is that i cant get enough volts from the battery to be able to start my car, so what my father-in-law and i did today was he made it so that i have to go under the car tap some wire to something to make the car start(and a little after that he made the connection close to the battery and tap the wire to the positive connector) while the key is turned all the way. so he said to try and get the diagram to be able see what goes where and which fuse and bla.h blah blah blah...i'm learning alot though
