3rd gen vs 4th gen
#41
Did I mention that 3-gens got alloy wheels standard on every model???
Rosa. Yup 4-gens have alot of mod available. So does that mean you are going to do all of them?? Mevi and the plastic manifolds aren't exactly easy. Coilovers are nice. But what is the point after you set it once? Nothing. You really going to spend $1300 or so on some real units like JICs or are you going to cheap out on some GCs?

I have yet to get my 3rd gen going because I'm waiting on my father to put in the new motor, but as i wait I read up as much as i can. It seems people bash the VE for the VTC issue. Is the VTC really that bad? I mean if you actually take the time to maintenance your motor, ie check fluids change the oil when proper; you shouldn't have that problem, right? I read that its troublesome getting the right oil filter, but at the same time people say the toyota filter works great. As for the mods; I feel from what I've read; we have a fairly large amount of mods, i havn't looked into what you can do on a 4th gen that you can't on a 3rd gen, but if you're really going to invest that kind of money into a car, I guess you shouldn't own such an old car. (I'm kinda commenting against myself there too) I mean, I want all i can get out of my car; but at what point does it become too much money spent on extra horses? I know for sure that I'd like to do the following to mine when i get the extra money...
--the ASP Underdrive pulley
--Lightened flywheel
--Y pipe
--catback exhaust (if i can get one for close to nothing)
--Drill holes in the intake before the filter that way i dont spend tons of money on a CAI (I live in arizona, so no matter what the air is going to be hot) *is there anything wrong with drilling holes? I've hear of it many times*
--probably some lightweight rims, but seems kinda hard to get the weight of rims online, they all focus on how it fits.
--a muffler that would compliment the y pipe and hopfully make the car sound mean
I'm probably missing a few things, but these are all common upgrades / mods that i see many maxima.org members doing. the mods that actually add hp; how much can i expect to see at the wheel from those? (yes i know it's been asked many times i just can't find a straight answer by browsing the forums only)
all in all; I'm very excited about my maxima as it is; I like the body style of both the 4th gen and the 3rd gen, but from from what I've heard around, it seems the 3rd gen was much better built (correct me if im wrong)

look, all maxima's are great...
I have personally had a 3rd gen and now a 4th gen and plan to have a 5th gen possibly...
I believe that every gen has it's weaknesses and strengths...in the end, it all balances out and the result is we are all driving deceptively fast, well built, high quality, high performance cars for the money!

BTW: I have a '95 Maxima SE 5spd that runs high 14's and an '88 300zx Turbo 5spd that does about the same...until next summer that is....so no minivan here And hey, I know your local, we should meet up some time, even if we do disagree about 3rd and 4th gens.

Well those steelies with plastic hub caps are hotter?? I hate to break it to you but you will most likely hate those GCs. They are not true coilovers and with the maxima extremely short shock travel, you can't lower the car hardly with out serious wear to the stock.
4-gens are okay I guess. But it's funny to see those guys scramble for stuff we already have. Like an ECU for the 97+, mevis/DE-K manifold, lsd (4-gen-I30 versions aren't any better than the 3-gen versions unless you spend $1500+ install on a quaife) etc.. But if I got a 4-gen or I30, I'd be looking at the same stuff.

I'm not planning on doing ALL bolt-ons at the moment, I'm staying away from FI at the moment because I have the Z, MEVI and ECU are always a possibility, however the DE-K manifold may be a better option if the custom pieces become available.

hey rosamax u bought a 4thgen now we should meet sometime in the spring and ill show you how ur old 3rd gen is doing (ive done a lot) cant wait til it gets warm and i can rebuild the vtcs im going to be running autocross
on a side note ive never driven a 4thgen but from what i read and what i see either way if you get a 3rd or 4th gen your going to have fun and there is plenty of upgrades and ways to make your max fast handle great sound good look good and make it your own

man...this thread is out of hand...
all maxima's are great! in performance, "bang for the buck" and quality...that's all there is to it...
sure every generation has it's trade-offs, but it all balances out in the end...!!
in either case none of the arguements for either generation matter much to me...as you give me any maxima....and I will turn it into something that will take you on the outside of laguna seca turns, and then put a few bus lengths on the straights and then if you still don't get it, brake hard enough to make you swerve past me...nuff said...lol and that's on the track and not the canyons!

I personally wouldn't kick any Max to the curb if given to me. Not even an old L28 example. I adored my 2G...hell, I want another one it was so good! Best Japanese sedan the 80s made. Still great today, just low on power.
I've never driven a 4 or 5G, or a 6G for that matter. I hear 5Gs are the best all-around performers stock for stock in handling, acceleration, etc.
I just wish I had the cash and garage to do stuff to my 3G outside of little things. I'd like to lower it about 1.5 inches, I'd like to get the engine throroughly tuned up, I should get an intake, new wheels (17s at the most), get dings worked out, the list goes on.
