reinforcement is not necessary. It is not a bad idea but with the right thickness metal you will be fine without it. I mean its a very small part and it would not be easy to bend.
reinforcements would really only help with someone leaning on it or pushing in hard on it (and then only if they push where the reinforcement is). in other words if a baseball or something hits the center section it is going to bend it whether it has reinforcements or not.
But like I said you can do it either way. I wouldnt worry about it though...not worth the time involved imo.

it can be hollow, if you use 16-18 ga metal it wont dent up as easily, it better be welded good though. look to spend over 500 bucks to have someone do it for you

Anyone think this is a good project to learn to weld on. It seems like i could buy a trunk from a junkyard and play with the metal and welding and all that. Or is it something you have to really know what your doing?
