speaker sizes that fit front door?

Birthday's coming up so i'm going to splurge.

I was looking around on Car domain and some of the sites in the stickies. I didn't see anything that listed what options there are for speaker sizes.

I have a bose system in my 90 SE, from the looks of crutchfield and other sites, the 4 x 6 is the stock replacement with no mods. Going that route, does anyone have any recommendations? I just have a 3 yr old pioneer deck in the car that is hooked up to the existing wiring. I haven't plugged in an adapter either. Also, do I absolutely need to replace all four speakers at once or can I just replace the front speakers and amps and leave the rear speakers and amps in place with non-amped speakers?

If I do the mdf mod, what other speaker sizes work? Is it worth it?

Budget for speakers is under $100 (I'm on a budget).

If this should be in a different section, I apologize ahead of time .... especially to Danny and Matt ;]

You can fit 6.5" speakers in the front with adapter pods. James92SE sells them for a nominal fee. As for speaker brands, that I can't really help you with.

with the bose, stock replacement are 4 inches. but like mizeree suggested, i'd get some speaker mounts from james92se so you can fit 6.5s in the front doors. direct bolt on replacment for the stock mounts.

i got some pioneer 4x6s in the front, and I wish I would have got some 6.5s... and you can change just the front ones or just the rears, you dont have to change al of them at once.. but it would be better if you did

i fit 6x9's in front=>

i removed the door panels and cut away some of the back of the bose grill plastic and mounted teh speakers directly to the door panel. I am fairly pleased but might end up soundproofing later as there are a few rattles with heavy bass. There is that black felt inbetween the grill and the speaker so there is no evidence to passengers that 6x9's are in there.

i altered the stock Bose encasement to fit 4x6 Boston Acoustic. Just need a saw and make them fit. Drill 4 holes and hook up the leads. The BA's were on sale as a closeout for ~$100.

I recently had my front speakers replaced with 5 1/4 at a local shop. I didn't have the time to do the job myself and the installer was very well spoken. He said the 5 1/4 slip right into place. They left the original 6x9 Bose in the back and just bypassed the dead Bose amp. Also replaced the Bose (Clarion) headunit and CD player (sony) with a 2003 model Alpine.

All in all, it sounds good. I didn't want to go crazy given the fact the car is getting a little long in the tooth at 164K miles. Hoping to go another three years with the old gal. Best car I've ever owned.

I've only got about 100k, but I won't do much more than what you're talking about.

Did they put in the adapter to convert a non-bose to play through the rear bose speakers?

Once you bypassed the amps, you won't need any stinking bose adapter that they will try to sell you for 30 bucks (Best Buy price). From my personal experience, I put a 3 way 6x9 in the back, bypassed all the amps, and left my original front bose because I'm too damn poor to buy a set for the front. As of now, the front sounds really good with the Kenwood 45x4 MOSFET HU that my friend gave me for free, the sound could be better, but hey, I'm not complaining. I bought a pair of 4x6 front speaker pods from a GXE with active speakers, don't know if I should go with the 4" or the 4x6" since the bose enclose was designed to deliver more bass.... choices choices....

Interesting. I didn't know that about the enclosure, though it makes sense. Still, I would think that cramming a 6 1/2 in there would probably have more bass than a 4" in the enclosure and cost about the same. Not sure though.

read up on bose, the thing had an early implementation of the echo tube technology thing that bose raves about in their newer cd players,. basically all it does is acts as a secondary drum that will generate amplified bass + air movement generated from the speakers, thus it makes a bit better of a thump when the volumes are up. Try by passing the amps, then turn the volume up and play something with a lot of bass and you will know what I mean, this is provided with the fact that you have an aftermarket HU installed, the original won't be able to drive the speakers to that level without the amps.

Works like a subwoofer box for all practicality.

i bought some 4x6 speaker pods that came out of a non-bose 3rd gen. I had to cut them a tad to fit my 4x6 speakers in (just little slices) and they work great for the front, only problem i have is a tiny rattle in pass side door, i cant seem to figure out. it will be gone as soon as i get some thump in the trunk.

4x6 speakers suck. Best bet is to go buy some MDF make you own pods to fit 6.5" speakers. Best upgrade in the sound department plus most of the good component systems are 6.5 or 5.25. If you want the best sound get components. IF you just want to get by then by whatever stock size that you have in coaxials. You guys are making this too hard. If you decide to run you bose speakers from a 4 ohm HU then you can expect those speakers to blow. They are 1 ohm stable. There is a adapter that you can buy but I am real clueless on what it is.

My Boston Acoustic 4x6 are by far the best speakers I have heard in a long time, so... don't go dissing the 4x6...
