Engine shuts off when taking off cold.

I have a 91 automatic SE with 210,000 miles. The tranny finally decided to go so got that fixed recently. But ever since, my car doesn't behave like it used to.

The guy who serviced the tranny didn't really do a good job. The shifts feel kind of jerky and slips most of the time. Also, if I don't warm my car up for a few minutes and put it in drive or reverse the engine decides to shut off.

I took it to another mechanic, and he said that the tranny is the problem, something about an air leak or something. Could the engine shutting off be related to the tranny service I had recently.

The car idles and revs smooth when in park. I only have the problem when I decide to put the car in gear

What could be the problem? Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions?

The second mechanic might be right, I really don't know. You might try putting on a new fuel filter if you haven't recently. That will cause the same problem.

Fuel Filter

Thanks for your reply. I changed the fuel filter like 35,000 miles ago. Maybe I will give this a try.

But the thing is that it revs pretty smooth in park or neutral. When the car is warmed up and I could roll without stalling, the car seems to run okay, meaning tranny slips and jerks, until I come to a stop when the engine feels like it wants to shut off, revs to around 400 rpm, and jumps back to around 700 rpm.
