Trunk Popper idea...

Hey Guys,
Has anyone put a trunk popper on their trunk? By trunk popper I mean the same thing that is used for popping open shaved doors .
Before I was thinking of using a linear actuator, but I don't want to fool with it and possibly have it go right through my trunk .
I have an extremely heavy trunk lid because I have an amp, an "amp rack," neons, sound dampening material, and a spoiler all to pop open. The button to pop open the trunk just doesn't lift it anymore and I even have trouble trying to use the key to open it...
Any ideas??

Also, if I did this I'd try to make the popper work when I hit the button on the drivers side door...and make it work with my keyless entry trunk pop...

You do know that a door pop for shaved doors just pops the door a small amount. It will not help at all with what you want (raising a heavy trunk).

I used struts on mine (copied Matt) and it works great...pops the trunk up all the way without slamming it up. Maybe you can double up on the strut since you have amps and such.

another thing you can try is get some SE torsion rods. The SE rods are under more pressure and make the SE trunk fly up when you take the spoiler off. It may be enough tension to rais yours without making it fly up.

Or you can get SE rods and helper struts if it doesnt raise up all the way.

edit: I just reread your message. Yeah a door pop should pop it up enought for you to open it but it will just close again if you are not back there to get it when it pops. When you said actuator it threw me off since that is usually used to open something up fully.

Yeah, I just want to be able to open it easily, lol...Once the trunk is up it will stay up unless the wind blows it down or something, lol...I just want it to pop open say an inch so I can get my fingers under it and open it...

I never really cared too much for the flip-flop trunk...and you won't be able to really see the amp mounted to the trunk lid if I do that...thanks though

I guess nobody else has attempted to do this...

If anyone has done this by chance I'm looking for pictures of where exactly you made the hole in the trunk lip for the popper and where it makes contact with the trunk lid itself.

not so hard...its real easy...

yo check it...

i had a remotestarter/alarm combo from dei on my max (RIP)

i also had the trunk popper....

what you need to buy is a trunk release solenoid.....that is if you got a dei product...(only crappy part is that bestbuy, and circuit city dont sell dei products anymore)

now the solenoid is like an actuator with a wire sticking out. that wire is tied around the "trunk striker"...(ill try to get pics up.)

the way its wired up is pretty simple....you need a relay for this...using ur wire diagram find your accessory output (on the dei product its a orange wire) but the tricky part is that the relay and the solenoid is powered up using a ground (not a constant 12V supply) once hooked...you should hold the button and it should respond 2 seconds while holding it. ...and VOILA....

now you can show off your custom trunk with 4 12's and 6 amps....(RIGGGHHHHTTTT)

Dont hold me responsible if u mess up...my recommendation to you is this...call off all debts with anyone that you know who does alarms etc...cuz installation on that piece alone was gonna cost me $75..i had my bro (NocturnalI30) hook mine up for me...if anything ill try to get a quicktime movie of it popping up..and/or use my cousins third gen and take detailed pics...cuz your probably wondering what the "striker" is.....

Striker - open your trunk...now look down and you see that hole where that trunk latch goes.....the thing that locks the trunk down is called the striker..

Good Luck to you......Damn I havent had a 3rd gen for a while now (5 months now) and i still know my $h*t...lol...

and also......you might wanna try...adding some form of a weight....to attach to the back bar of the trunk....so it can pull it up......yeh i no u need pics...ill see what i can do...

Hey Maroon'dMaxSE thanks for your responses...

I have a Crimestopper remote-starter/alarm combo + pager right now on the max. They do sell Crimestopper Trunk Release Solenoid kits. I'm glad to hear that you had the trunk popper too.

Do you remember specifically what brand/type/weight solenoid you had on your max?

Any pictures of the setup or the movie like you said would be awesome, like one of the solenoid wire that is tied around the trunk striker. And I'm wondering specifically where you cut the hole for the popper on the trunk lip...is it inside or outside of the rubber weather strip?

I have a bunch of 12 Volt 30/40 Amp Relays laying around at home so that's no problem. I was of course going to try to use the trunk output on the Crimestopper remote.

I just hope if I do this setup that the solenoid will be strong enough to lift the trunk lid and give me a chance to pull it up the rest of the way.

My cousin will be putting this on if I go this route...he still likes the linear actuator idea better...truth is, I do too, but I think it will be pretty hard trying to judge the distance it has to travel, figuring out where to mount it, and the possible problems it could cause.
Has anyone else used an actuator on their trunk??

Probably til saturday....if not friday...

The solenoid was a Dei trunk release solenoid...but to me it looks universal.....sorry man but im keepin mine..
