How do I remove a 240sx steering wheel?

I saw at the yard a 240sx wheel in great shape last time I was there, didn't think about grabbing it. My question is, how do I remove the steering wheel and what tools will I need? Will I need a steering wheel puller tool that you have to buy at an auto parts store?

Autozone will loan you a steering wheel puller for free I believe. I have to assume you'll need it to remove the 240SX one since you need one to remove a Maxima one.

Yeah all you need is a steering wheel puller. It will just bolt right on after the steering wheel cap is off, and it pulls it off really easy. I have a 240 sx wheel and i absolutely love it, too bad the new maxima i just bought has an airbag...

Ok, now that that question is answered. How do I remove the center piece from the 240sx wheel? Do I just peel/pry it off with my fingers?

i thought it unscrews from the back.

oh and the steering wheel...if it's coming from a junked car get one foot up on the dash and 2 hands on the wheels and rock that sucker back and forth to get it out.

lmao.. i was gonna do that to get my wheel off the maxima so i can put on my 240sx wheel... but then it was really tight on there, so i figure i'll just go borrow a steering wheel puller at a shop.. i need to use the leather restorer on the 240sx wheel first anyway

When you take your old wheel of make sure that your tires are straight forward and that your steering wheel is centered. Then when you put your new steering wheel on, your car tires should still be pointing straight ahead, then you put it on where the steering wheel is centered, then your wheel will be inline with your tires.

LMFAO...

It isn't quite as messy to use a steering wheel puller, but takes a minute or two longer.

I think Danny's method is the best one for a junkyard car.

You just bang on each end of the wheel and it sorta vibrates off. Or jiggle it off

Does anyone else see the sexual connotations in that sentence? I don't even want to know what else you do in your car

You need safety torx bits. I suppose someone will find some sexual reference in that also.

What you need is a screwdriver bit, in all probability it is the same used for a NX2K airbag steering wheel.

Special bit that adapts to a 5/8" screwdriver socket rather than the traditional 1/4".

Order the T50H bit (this is the size used on NXs so if anyone can verify it is the same for 240s please do) at a NAPA autostore ONLY, it does not seem to be available elsewhere. It's a basic T50 bit but it's hollow and about $3.50-4.00 at Napa.

The H in the end of T50 indicates it is HOLLOW (with a hole in the middle of the bit that matches a post in the bolt's head). Check the bolt to see if indeed the HOLLOW part is needed since a regular Torx bit will not work there. Hence the suggestion for NAPA.

SOme have gotten it from Snap-On but at $20 for one bit it is overly expensive. Or, if the need is not too utgent, you can check eBay, sometimes you can get a whole set for like $20.

Chris

Well, went to the yard yesterday. I hate inconsiderate peeps. Someone smashed out the sunroof on the 240sx. HAd to swipe all the glass pieces off the seat, then I realized the leather was all ruined from the rain, some nasty stuff was coming from water + leather. I did notice you need a screwdriver to loosen one screw so the center cover can come off also. I'll probably go back next week for the leather e-brake handle and some sensors off a low mileage engine since I didn't bring my wrench set with me.

Went to the yard to grab a 5spd ecu for my friends 5spd gxe swap. Saw an SE wheel in mint condition, asked how much it was and I took it off. loosening the bolt and hitting it a few times on each side did the trick. The only thing different was my cruise control harness, so I had to put my old one on the new wheel. $10 and 20 minutes later, a brand new looking steering wheel is installed.

My interior was restored with the following:
dash a/c triangle vents $3
dash clock $5
'94 SE thicker tweed armrest $5
89-91 SE replacement leather steering wheel $10

No complaints in that dept.
