Help with power door locks

Hello,

The power door locks in my '92 GXE seems to not want to work sometimes.

The keypad, door lock button, and turning the key in the cylinder (twice to activate/deactivate power locks) seem to go dead.

When the locks do not work, and I press the lock/unlock button, I can hear a click from under the dashboard (meaning relay is working?), but nothing. And then after driving around for a few minutes (or hours), it decides to work again. It usually decides to quit working once a week, and I am not sure where to start looking for the problem.

Thank you for any helps...

-Sage

Resolder your door lock timer. There are 1.2 million threads about that here somewhere. Look in the stickies for a how-to.

Thank you.

I de-soldered the timer PC board, and then re-soldered it with lead-free electronic component solder. No problems yet.

Not tryin' to hijack this thread but same problem about posting here, joined a little while ago but gotta have 15 posts before you can post a question or brag or search or...

Girlfriend just bought a Pearl White '89 GXE today. Needs a few cosmetics and don't know what the heck some of the buttons and switches are for (LOL!) That, and heard the strange clicking in the dash. Almost sounds like a worn out door or light or key chime.

Thanks for the space, full of questions but they'll hafta wait until we get our post count up. Happy to be here, lookin' forward to helpin' my gf with her car.

Several different hits on this one. Here is a freebie. It is well worth the 20,30, or whatever bucks to join the org. Support it and it will support you.

Hmm, now that I think back it's lookin' like the problem might NOT be with the lock box. Door chime might be the culprit but then again...

Former owner complained of a "clicking" sound, the door locks constantly locking and unlocking by themselves and a dead battery in the mornin' and brought it to the shop, tried to get the car to malfunction for days and nothin' happened. Gave it back to the customer and wouldn't ya know it...she called a day or so later that the battery was dead! Had her bring it back in, test drove it, even left it out back for a week without touching it and it fired right up...GO FIGURE...just has to be sumthin' she was doin' when she parked it at home because it started flawlessly at the shop. Problem with the factory alarm (is there one?)? Gremlins in her garage? LOL!

Anyways, as mentioned in my post above, my gf just got the car yesterday evenin' and is lookin' forward to enjoying it. Has a few minor bugs but they'll be taken care of in the next few days. I'll get a closer look & listen at what's makin' the noise before long.

As far as joining, we probably will but in the meantime it sure would be nice to ask questions (POST) so we can get the car roadworthy. Also, can't wait to fabricate a few trinkets for her car. I'm into Thunderbird Super Coupes and have a blast doing custom parts & mods for them, bound to be SOMETHING that I can fab up for her car LOL!

Thanks again for the space to post!

First off, it seems your girl has much better taste in cars than you. Second... one option to obtain information without creating threads is to do a quick scan of old threads by just thumbing through. When you find something relevant to your situation, revive the old thread. Hear from you soon, I'm sure.

Kind've surprised to see the room under the hood and that it's a v-6...can you say M90 blower LOL! Doubt she's gonna let me get anywhere near her car with a tape or notepad, she'll know I'm up to sumthin'!

Then again, cain't have her Max outrunnin' my land yaught now can we???? Wouldn't be able to go out in public ever again!

89 maxima does not have a door lock timer

only 92-94 (maybe 91, some people argue that) have it

when locks die or are intermittent and you still hear the click under the dash when you try to lock/unlock, that's usually the problem and needs to be resoldered

Thanks! That right there will save me some guesswork until I pick up on some of the basic ins & outs on these cars. Wouldn't ya know it though, the driver door lock was malfunctioning to begin with. Lock it and close the door and it would pop back up into the unlocked position, have to lock it with the door key for right now but that's fine.
Also, window in the rear pass door seems to be out of it's track, might have a chance/time this evenin' to get the panel off and take a looksee at it. First thing I did when I found these boards was to check the FAQ, some great sites listed there, believe the one on Geocities is yours? Has a section on replacing the regulator, lots of pics, very good article.

Pickin' up a Haynes or Chiltons today on the car to get some basic info on this & that. Already takin' a mental inventory of what aluminum pipe I have at the shop too, got a cold air kit blueprinted up in my head LOL! Again, thanks for the space in this thread.

ps: nelledge...scanning this section is how I found this thread

Hi,

I have a simirlar question. I bought a 92 Maxima GXE recently. It has a keypad under the door handle on driver and passenger side. The seller didn't know the code to unlock doors and open doors.

Is there any way to reset these codes?

Thanks,
Ghazi.
