Squeaky belt problem.

Hey guy. I have had this problem with my 1990 GXE ever since I got it. It is caused by the buttons on the vent control unit (you guys know what I am talking about - 1st button routes air to the head, 2nd button routes air to the feet and head, 3rd button routes air to the feet, fourth to feet and defrost and fifth to the defroster). Whenever any of the buttons on the unit except fifth button (defrost) is pushed, a squealing sound comes from the belts. The guys I bought the car from told me that he showed it to a mechanic and was told that the noise was due to the belts being too tight. He then sprayed wd-40 on the belts and they stopped squealing. I had my timing belt and the other belts changed a while back, so I am not sure about the belt tightness being the reason. so

1) What exactly do you guys think is causing this problem and how do I stop this annoying noise (other than cranking up the radio, which I messed up while installing but thats another topic for another day)? What about the spraying belt with wd-40 solution? Is it OK?
2) Is driving with the defrost on all the time bad for the car? Whenever the defrost button is pushed, it feels like some kind of compressor is engaged, and then after a long drive the car makes a weird noise (like if you push a thin stick into a slow moving fan blade).

Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance.

1. Loose belt shrieks as it dies; time TOdo smtg -or- just keep towing&towing phone no. handy. Then u need taxi too. ...Too tight belt breaks the engine. No WD-40 for belts. Go adjust the belts; never use that wd-mechanic again.
2.a. Only bad for the driver.
2.b. Check out the noise source -or- just keep towing&towing phone no. handy.

try using the belt cleaner. see if that help. make sure to rinse the belt with water afterward.
