I think my guages might be going or something has anyone heard of this.

I'll be driving in my car and the temp guage will go up quickly to overheating then in 20 seconds go back down to the middle(needle will get horizontal) and I caught my gas guage go from 3/4 full to empty to 3/4 of a tank after I filled up the night before and had only gone 60 miles since fillup. when the temp guage does this I can't smell anything nor see steam or anything coming out fo the car, I also see no leaks around the car or anything.

I have a 91 4dsc, 60,000 miles, power everything, leather, rubber wing, the works etc.

my temp gauge used to do that on a few very cold winter nights.. but nothing went terribly wrong so i didn't do anything about, and now it doesn't do it again..

my fuel gauge used to go empty at around 100km mileage, but after awhile it goes back up to 1/4.. it was a problem with the fuel pump, my mechanic took out the fuel pump to test it, and fixed it while he's there.

My temp gauge does the same thing. I changed the thermostat and it flushed the coolant and still does the same thins, but the engine runs cool. I believe it is a common problem after a while.

Same -or- simi?

Sensor ok: If the needle jumps up, somewhere is a shorted/pinched wire to +12V. If it goes down, theres a cut, gauge att screws oxidized or loose.

Apollo was repaired like that, Houston gave directions where to hit [dash].

same position... sometimes it doesn't even act up. but when it does i just hit the dash board. the needle either goes wayy high or just off. i've taken the gauge cluster apart once already cleaning the connection points. but i dont' know what else to do. i guess i'll take a look at the wire and also clean the screws since i failed to do that last time, i only cleaned the connections that go on the plugs.

maxima94ever, the ends of the spoiler are held on by clips, just carefully pull it up. The middle area of the spoiler (3rd brake light) howerver, are held on by bolts, and can be accessed from underneath the trunk cover.

I changed out my gauges to a set of white face frome a 91 se I have a 93 gxe and now sometimes the spedo stops working and then starts up again same for the temp. the temp is'nt a problem but i would like the spedo to work all the time. changed out meaning took the 91's apart and put the guts into my 93's housing.

Could be common grounding in -or- to the assy acting. Check for bad contact or a cut in print. (Note: Speedo sensor is known to pop out.)

It could be your speed sensor is going bad. Gauges are plug and play. So there isn't much room for eror. But it's a REALLY common problem where the speed sensor goes and the speedo passes out from timt to time. Until it's completely dead. I drove around a year with no speedo, until i got a new tranny.

Well as an update to this, what happened was my water pump failed and the water evaporated out of the radiator and the engine overheated and the block cracked, all original 91 maxima with 60,000 miles 4dsc. Oh well what can you do, I'm now crusing around in an 02 accord coupe v6

Holy crap, It's pain seeing a Max being treated this way. You need to take a car maintenance class ASAP.

I found most of the time swapping out the gauge would fix it.

To actually fix the gauge I found just resoldering everything does the trick (just like the clocks).

the sensors are good the weired thing is that why the temp gauge stops working the spedo will start or vice verisa there was or is a write up on swapping out gauges i just cant find a link. next thing i am going to do is take the faces of my old working gagues and switch them with the white ones. just hope the needles dont get f&*ked up on what they are reading. Everything was working good before i did this and i didnt mess up the circit prints so there sould not be any bad conections, also dose any one know hoe to get'em to glow blue, blue lights illm dont seem to work but i will prob just go back to green

If u take needles out, u must somehow lock gauge axels in place. Otherwise u loos zero position and gauge reading will be erroneous.

this crap was driving me crazy but after taking them out like 50 times I figured it out, the damn screw on the chime ground had to be moved over and help ground the spedo on the 100k conection .

The needle is to be locked rigid on the gauge axle and stay that way forever. The axle and its magnet are turned via outer coil magnetism created by the sender's current flow and the needle will show that current flow. When no current, the return spring pulls it back to zero.

Needle has a definite zero pos on the axle. If needle is taken off, spring turns the axle way past 0mph mark. Then, as its replaced on the axle any way u please, gauge readings will never please u...
