ve trans mated to vg, a few problems

this past week my pops helped me switch a vlsd trans into his 89se. we switched the axles and hubs along with the transaxle, and everything fell into place. i was unable to help him finish the project, and after asking him some q's, i have found a few things were unfinished. i asked him if he had switched the carrier shaft bearing, and of course he did not. there is a vibration at all rpms (noticeable at acceleration). would this bearing cause this vibration? i know we will have to switch these out, but i am wondering if an alignment will fix this vibration? are there any other pieces/ procedures that we may have left out? thanks -- matt

c'mon, anybody ever mated a ve trans to a vg? i put it up on the rack today and there's a little slop in the axles, up and down. that leads me to believe the axles are causing the vibration, since it's constant. the bearing would only make a difference when it's engaged.

yes, at a dead stop there's no vibration. once the car starts moving, it becomes much more noticeable undr acceleration.

If you are like me and want to see the cause with your own eyes then try this......... [I am not responsable if you hurt or kill yourself doing this!!]

Jack the front of car up and place it securely on jackstands then start the car up,put it in gear to get the front wheel/wheels turning then VERY CAREFULLY look under there to see if you find where the vibration is coming from....

Again i say BE VERY CAREFULLLLLLLLLL!!!!

he said there's slop in the axles.

the mission now is to figure out why it's there and correct it.

I'm not sure if they're the same but did you use the VE axles? Where is the slop? In the trans? Are you sure the axles are popped all the way in the trans? I think we're starting to get away from trouble shooting here guys! DO both Axles have the same amount of play? Give us the details man!

i checked it out a little closer, and it seems as though the slop is mostly up and down in the left axle, inside the nuckle. this leads me to believe the left axle is the culprit. i compared it to an axle i have lying around here, and there's about 1/2" more play in the axle on the car. i guess we should run til the axle wears out completely?

Left?? Looks like you might have put in either the wrong VE axle or put in the VG axle. Or the tranny is shot to hell.

if i had the ve axle side by side with the vg, how would i tell the difference? i thought i kept them seperate during the switch......

the slop is not noticeable where the axle mates the trans, it's actually inside the knuckle of the axle. that's what leads me to believe it's the axle. i still could be mistaken though.

Just a guess but I am guessing the VG axel is not as thick as the VE VSLD tranny.

the VE axle will be slightly longer inside the tranny, and it will also be larger diameter on the hub end.

Inside the CV joint?? ie.. rubber boot? Then yeah, the cv joint is toast. Not a bad problem to have considering it might be something worse.
