you only tap into one hose going from / to the radiator.
doesn't make any MAJOR difference which one. I suggest running it through both coolers though (external and radiator)

If you did it like internetautomart says then you dont have to attach anything to the trans from the ecxternal oil cooler...

You take one fo the lines coming from the tranny to the radiator, run it into you external cooler, take the line coming out of your external cooler and run it into the radiator where you took the first line off (the one running into the other side of your cooler)

This way it would run thorugh the rad then throguh the extra cooler or vice versa depending what line you used.

only applies to auto tranny and the benefit is theoretically longer trans life since the fluid tends to burn from overheating

Ok I understand, now would that provide enough flow for the trans?

It is for an automatic

Automatics commonly fail due to high temps of fluid!

Thanks MrSector9 !

unless you have a very restrictive cooler it should be fine for flow. now keep in mind if your tranny is on it's last leg the cooler won't do jack for you.

What do you call last leg ?

It still shifts fine in all gears and can tear up the road on acell.

It shifts as smooth as can be expected except for 2nd gear.

but it shifts 2 hairs harder than the rest of the gears going into second gear!

All these things you describe are the symtoms of a auto tranny on its way out to tranny heaven.....Sorry but true....

are you serious?

if that's not a good indication of a healthy tranny then i don't know what is.

2nd gear solenoid might* be acting up..but that's about it for the moment.

if it shifts funny it's usually a constant issue...or it occurs in all gears...that's when i can say that it's on it's last leg....but if he can accel and tear it up fine then there's nothing to worry about.

what he's describing is more a shift quality/comfort than the actual tranny shifting into the next gear.

Hey Guys, Yeh you are right DanNY the transmission is not having a problem changing into second gear it just shifts a little hard.

The other gears are smooth as slik and I can put the pedal to the floor and It will shift into all gears very quickly and smoothly.

It is only when I do a slow laid back acelleration when it shifts a little hard!

I heard about these coolers and wanted to install one

Will cleaning and adding contact grease to the transmission electrical conections help get the proper amount of juice to the 2nd gear soloniod to perhaps smooth out the shifting ?

What is the best one or name brand for tranny coolers?

Thanks Guys !!

contact grease wouldn't hurt anything...but i don't think it'll do too much for you.

i personally like the B&M coolers..they are built better.

change the fluid before you put the cooler in.

Only two things to add for you. Get the biggest you can fit, I think the one I had on my PGT was for a full blown RV expected to tow another car. Also, I agree with the earlier poster about running the lines first through the rad, then the cooler. Oh and don't forget to top off your tranny fluid, there will be more needed to fill all the lines in the cooler. I know sort of a duh reminder, but sometimes we all need them. It's really like a 10-20 min install, easy and your tranny will thank you.

depends on where you live...if you're in a colder climate a big cooler might keep the ATF too cold for the tranny to shift properly

I was unable to quickly find the coolers on that web page but i am sure I can find them else where on the web !

This is probobly a dumb question but when you mount the tranny cooler infront of the radiatior dosent the air flow become restricted over the radiator and cause the engine to run hotter?

Thanks Guys

Naw....Tranny coolers are small in size [average 3"wide-12" long] So they won't interfere with your radiadtors ability to cool the car....in theory it should aid in cooling because the rad. doesn't have to keep tranny fluid cooled down as much......

there's a search box on the summit web site...yes SEARCHHHH...
type in B&M coolers and all the coolers will appear

just TRY and use the search...and please TRY to look for information on your own. like greenmax said...if i gave you any more information i'm going have to go and install it on your car.

oh and before you even ask...the lines are 5/16...3/8 would work also...make sure the fittings/adapters are sized correctly.

I think it's more unrealistic for someone to ask, "how do I know my tranny is on its way out?" than the folks here trying to tell them what to (or not to) look for.

I have had slight hard 2nd gear shifting on my '92 GXE for as long as I can remember (and that's even before I got my license (family car purchased new in '92)). It is still running okay.

I had a 1997 Pathfinder SE that had slight hard shifting into second gear. This started at 30k mi, and I drove the car 108k miles in 3.5 years. Traded it in for a 2001.

The 2001 also developed slight hard shifting into 2nd gear, and by this time, I am thinking this is normal... At 42k miles, my transmission refused to shift into 3rd (4 speed auto). Got a brand new tranny under warranty, and after another 30k miles, I seem to notice ever slight hard shift into 2nd again.

Maybe it's my driving style, albeit the hard shifting on the Maxima started before I even drove the car...

Anyway, what do I think is a sign that the tranny is on its way out? If you find that you are chugging along the parkway at 25MPH because you are stuck on 2nd gear? Oops, I guess by then it has gone out...
