Putting a VG into a VE...part 2

Hello again guys,
the project started today and it's going pretty smooth. The main task today was to see where the ECU cable goes through the firewall and prepare everything for it's removal. It turned out to be a little more complicated than we thought. After removing the dash we also had to remove bunch of other "boxes" behind the vent control that have the radiator for the AC as well as the heater core. Finally we saw the holw trough which the cable exits the interior so pretty much we are done on the inside. Saturday we'll pull the VE engine out and sunday hopefully the VG will go in. Two questions:

1. Can we pull the engine out without removing the tranny? If yes, what about the axles? I still haven't looked under the engine to see what the deal is....
2. The two engine mounts located on the support bar-are they the same for the VG and the VE. I've heard that the block is the same for both engines so it seems logical for the mounts to be as well, right?

I can take pictures as the process is going. The problem is that I don't know how to post them, so if anybody would like to do this for me, pls let me know. Thanks in advance!

why did you have to remove the heater core? I didn't have to do that when I pulled my old harness off my 93. I remember it wasn't fun getting that harness out though.

I really dont understand why you are doing all of this instead of getting the VE running properly but oh well.

You can drop the engine and transmission at the same time. For the mounts, not entirely sure, but if you just drop the engine you only have to unbolt the crossmember, you dont even have to mess with the mounts.

Unbolt the power steering and AC compressor from the engine though and leave those with the car.

I couldnt tell where to unbolt the PS pump from so I cut and unbolted the lines. It also wasnt going to be reused, so Id just recomend unbolting the lines. Probably easier then taking off the PS pump. But my system was already drained.

I have the feeling that I've seen pics of many pulled out engines and the tranny is still in the bay. Does that mean that I can pull my engine and don't even bother with dropping down the tranny? Also, I need an answer about the mounts guys-are the once on the bar the same for both engines?Thank you in advance once again....

Mounts are ve/vg specific. I'd drop both. I'm not sure if you have enough room to move the engine foward enough to get it clear of the pressure plate.

you don't have to pull the trans first, but you will have to pull the right axle as it runs through a bearing attatched to the motor. the hardest part may be mounting the vg to the trans with the crossmember giving you fits on the other side. i'm also assuming you're using an engine lift... but i do know if you already have you motor out it's not that hard to get the trans out....

i cant believe you tore the dash out to remove/swap harnesses you wasted alot of time with that because you dont need to. once the engines out you can remove the huse ruber gromet from the fire wall and pull the ecu plug through there

i would pull both axles out then pull the engine trans out as one

i think the ac compresor is engine spacific also so you would need to swap those and recharge the system

and the VE and VG do NOT have the same block

im one of the members that pulled both my VG motors out of my '89 SE and my '93 GXE. on my '89 i pulled the motor out with an engine lift and left the tranny in the engine bay <--- pics in my cardomain site on last page. on my '93 did the same thing again don't know y though but its better to take it out with the tranny as one. take out the passenger side axle if u decide to just pull the motor cuz if not ur gonna have a hard time pullin' the motor with the passenger side axle still on. trust me my dumba$$ learned the hardway. good thing i did not repeat this method on my '93.

While you got that dash out and have access to the heater core and plan to keep this car....Replace it!
