The thing is probably shot.....if you are short on $$ and want try and fix it,try some electrical contact cleaner spray..Crack it open and spray around the ***** while turning the ***** quickly.... maybe that will help it...

Is it coming from the front or the back?

You could just unplug the speaker that is making the noise....also there's a place in Dallas called Factory Service Center, that repairs them for a reasonable price. They repaired all 4 of mine since '97, and I have not had any problems out of them since.

I'm even using them now, with an aftermarket head unit.

All of the speakers are doing it. I think it's the head unit, I will try what he said.

Why do our Bose systems always go bad? I read somewhere that the capacitors they use heat up too much and that causes them to fail.

i love it (not). i live by dallas and when i needed repairs i couldn't find anyone local. i used johnson-electronics.com outside of boston. i could have saved a week and a half in shipping time.

Do aftermarket systems prove to be more durable?

some lasts longer than others. I prefer aftermarket system because for 1...they sound much better than the stockers and 2...more 'tweakablity' and what-not.

My 85 trans am's stocker was really good....Never had any problems with it..

I think early 90's chrysler had about the poorest quality stock systems out there....
