ATF level

Simple question to you guys but a little confusing for me.
ATF should be checked with engine warmed up and idleing, right? But when i shut the engine off and look at the dipstick again, the level is way above HOT range, is that normal? I just changed the fluid and want make sure i put the right amount in. (did not measure how much i took out)
