ebay CAI, MAFS problem?
ebay CAI, MAFS problem?
Have any of you that purchased the $45-$60 intake off of ebay experienced any mass airflow sensor problems? Im talking about the one you have to actually cut a hole for. I have had the intake on for a few months and the check engine light just recently came on. I pulled the code and it came back as the MAFS. So im wondering if my mafs just went to hell, or if it has something to do with the intake.
While we're on the subject, will the sohc mafs work on the dohc? and does anyone have a mafs for the the dohc that they would be willing to sell or trade for a 94 300zxtt mafs?
any feedback would be appreciated
thanks
rob

Apparently there are reasons which speed the MAF inevitable demise:
- vibration
- particles from low grade filter etc.
By readin this forum, my uneducated guess is that VE-ppl complain more of faulty MAFs. One reason could be the geometrical location: VE MAF connection is on 'outer arc' of engine movement. VG MAF is nearer the center of engine movement 'arc', and thus its MAF recives less direct shocks. Also the rubber hose/dampener kills vibrations better that the rigid hoses seen on CAI -settings.

The filters on them ebay specials are substandard....Replace it with a k&n filter....
Go get some electical contact cleaner and spray the little sensor inside the maf....It might get it working for you....Save some $$$...
AEM has a nice filter for their CAI. I have one on my NX. I will be using the EBay CAI for my 92 SE however I will use an AEM filter. AEM has the inside of their filter radiused to deliver a more laminer airflow. It was an issue in the SE-R circles with cheap filters causing a disruptive airflow across the MAF. Supposeddly JWT was one of the first to address it with the POP Charger.

I immediately put a K&N on it as soon as I installed it, so im not using that p.o.s. air filter that came with it. I think i will try cleaning the contacts and see if that doesn't help.
Thanks for the info
just a side note aftermarket filters that are are coated with oil such as k&n tend to kill MAF sensors. in a study done the oil coats the MAF sensor specifically the little wire inside to give it false readings. try cleaning the maf out first b4 replacing it.

I put it back in the other car. 2 complete swaps... auto to 5 speed and 5 speed to auto. I sold the other car to my cousin and he still owes me for it and said he'd give it back to me, but he seemed to have misplaced the car... haha
If anyone still has MAF trouble u can rip it apart and test resistance coming from the sensor. Will help determine if its shot.
Having said that, I have had a MAF that checked fine but was still stuffed (replacing with another MAF fixed the problem)
