So basically your engine will kill itself during cold start up, and will definitely kill itself during regular run. Also, I think vansskater is referring to heat lock, which happens to engine with no lubrication, and the heat generated from a running engine will evantually cause the metal surfaces to super heat so that it will literally melt and catches the piston in place, which in final means there will be a connecting rod going straight through the top of the piston, along with other goodies.

We don't know his situation, but c'mon about 14 bucks total for a decent oil change that will save you hundreds if not thousand is a good investment is it not? Plus, if you are new to the whole car thing, don't be afraid to ask, that's what the forum is for.

We don't mean to give you a hard time, it's just that oil is one of the cheapest, easiest, and most important things to pay attention to...and none of us want to see you blow your engine due to highly preventable circumstances. Happy Holidays!

Any of you high mileage guys ever stop to think that even though 5w is good for the winter, it's not thick enough for a worn engine? That stuff is recommended when your car is new. After 100k or so, you really think you should still be using that?

Yeah, I guess it's okay. I'd bet if I had that mileage, I could pull off a better compression since yours would be owned a bit more from all those cold winter 'thin oil like water' starts

Think about it..Don't you think that if the oil i have been using was damaging my engine it would have shown a sign by now?? My car does not smoke, leak or show any signs whatsoever that it has internal damage from the oil i use...I can still get on it from first to second gear and catch rubber every time..![Smilie](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Edit: But in theory, you do know you normally should increase the start up weight a bit for older worn engines. Says so in my tech book.

I run full synthetic 10w40 all year round.. works great. Untill you get into the Really cold weather and Really thick oils i dont think theres much to worry about along those lines (10w, 15w40). One of the big reasons manufactures recommend thiner oils,is that it can slighty improve gas millage. Thiner oil = less parasitic loss.
I like a bit thicker oil, it makes me feel better, figuring i drove my car REALLY hard for 60k miles and then i turboed it. Thicker oil will fill up the clearance in a slightly worn bearning better than thin oil. I run synthetic because of the turbo, its not watercooled so synthetic will take the heat better.

I had an autoshop change my oil/filter once as part of a major tune up. The next time I changed my oil, I found that he used some cheap aftermarket filter that was smaller than the stock dealer filter which I normally use. The tool I use to remove the filter (looks like a giant rachet socket that fits perfectly on the filter) was too big for the cheapie filter. Luckily, I had this "boa constrictor" tool laying around. Imagine a lever with a rubber belt attached that you wrap around the filter. Anyways, even with the boa tool, I ended up denting the filter while removing it. I guess they put it on real tight. Here in warm Southern Cali, I use 10w-30 Castrol Synthetic Blend.
