Matt, What all do you have in mind for your build? I've had a couple of folks ask me for an estimate to duplicate what I did (which I haven't gotten around to yet) but I sat on the car for almost 2 years waiting for bargains to show up on parts (eBay) It would be quite pricey for me to go out and buy everything outright that I have in my car.

I dunno yet.
I'm still contemplating, and it all depends on fundage on what I do as I'm building it up.
I know the compression is going up a hair and will be going with forged pistons in case I want to do low boost + high compression...

keeping stock rods.. they're good enough.
ARP stuff where I can.

cams are still in consideration. everyone turns their noses up at regrinds, but if they get the job done, who cares how they're made, right?

Don't forget the valve springs as well. Comp cam SR20 valve springs are cheap and will allow you to rev over 7500rpm.

I haven't gotten around to it yet but I was going to look into cams at some point. I think Webb offers regrinds that they hard weld so you can keep the proper base circle. Reed cams in Atlanta does regrinds for a fair price. My Dad used them back in his day and swears by them. A buddy back home had Reed do one for a 1st Gen MX-6. It was a hot cam but he had to modify the followers and the flimsy cam sprocket wouldn't hold up. Fortunatly, he was working at a machine shop and had the right equipment and I was sitting on a lot of spare parts to play with.

Maybe this is for another thread, but how does one determine what the Maximum lift and duration one can get away with for these cars?

clay the pistons, reassemble (If you simply want to find the maxium before contact I would assemble without gaskets), rotate, disassemble, measure

Matt, I don't mean to question your experience but, is there a chance the nut could have loosened simply because of punishment and age, without it being a torque issue? Or thats just highly unlikely? You do have 200k+ miles on it, and if I remember correctly, you did say you drove it hard all the time.

Anyway, sorry to hear this happened. Probably for the better.

FWIW I'd guess the rod bolt stretched causing the nut to loosen.
