Dash Lights out?

My dash lights went out about a year ago and I took it to a shop to have fixed. They seemed to have fixed it. Just lately though my radio went out and I took it out to make sure everything was connected ok. When I took it out, I found the shop had connected the Illumination control wire (Rheostat) from the factory harness to the ground wire on the factory harness. They apparently did this as a half assed fix. I found when you disconnect it the dash lights no longer will come on. How can I fix this the right way?

Anyone else had their dash lights go out on them? The only thing I can think of that might have caused it is the illumination wire from the new head unit, or possibly a wire from the alarm install? I'd really like to get this fixed!

it's been over a year, the chances of him having any recourse is very slim. especially when their fix, however ghetto it may be, did work and was working until he tampered with it.

now as far as fixing it right, I suggest you look at the wiring diagram in a manual and wire up accordingly

Yeah, I should make them fix it, and I may just, but I don't have any confidence in them after this. If I can fix it myself easily and know it's done right, that's what I'll do. At the least I'd like to know what needs to be done so I can tell them exactly what to do. The dash lights will still work when I reconnect the Illum. control (Rheostat) wire to the ground wire. But I'd like to track down the real problem and fix it.

If anyone has had the dash lights go out before, was it related to the dimmer circuit or a particular relay or something?
