Exhaust problem

Hey peoples, this moring going to work i did my routine walkaround the car , and saw something fishy. My catalytic converter has a small hole in it , so when its cold like today -17C (15F i think), the fumes come out of two places instead of one (my tail pipe lol). need your help, guys , you think i could patch it up since its not a major hole , or just change the whole exhaust? I mean it not like its ruining my car , but i want to keep my max for at least two more years . Thanks guys

Patching things up.

Try some J-B weld. If it doesn't work then oh well. You will be changing the cat any way.

It will not work...The catalytic converter under normal conditions will reach temperatures of about 1200 degrees, over 2000 degrees when raw gas is introduced...jb weld is good for 500 degrees constant....

Explain how you do a normal daily walkaround of the car and even SAW your cat, let alone a hole in it??

he saw the exhaust leaking.
I've seen it too on my old one.
it wasn't leaking from the cat, but from the gasket area between the cat flange and the pipe flange (made obvious by the black soot)

well up here in CANADA it can get VERY COLD, so when its around 15F outside and you start your car , the fumes out of your exhaust will make a nice cloud, and when you have TWO clouds of vapor/exhaust around your car instead of a single on ethen you get on you hands and knees to check under the car. hope that helps

There is something out there that can resist the heat. A teacher of mine in tech school awhile back brought his Altima in so the students can work on it, and his exhaust had a few holes in it being covered by some type of foil. When he showed me this, he explained about it and everyone was stunned after a good laugh. I didn't care too much at the time, but now I wish I payed attention. I do remember him sayin it resists the heat just fine, and he got it at Home Depot. Damn, I wish I could remember...

IS it 3M Aluminium Sticky Foil?

at Fedex we use the 3M sticky foil to temporarly patch up small dings and rips in containers, its great stuff, but im not sure if it would stand up to the heat. ill have to ask around

P.S a roll of that stuff is like 50$

Yup, it's commonly known as the "flex piece" in your exhaust. Your exhaust should also sound louder when you accelerate, or even make a whistling noise. Mine had a leak like that, and a new "flex piece" (with labor) cost around $300.

screw that. You can just buy a warpspeed y-pipe for about $200 (stainless is $250) and the new design eliminates the flex section all together. The older style would fully replace it.

If it is just your cat that is rotted out, you can get a high flow one for $100 or less if you shop around.

Yeah, I have a warpspeed test pipe I use when I race. However, I don't have to have my car inspected or go through emissions. I think most people do have some kind of testing in order to get their car licensed.
