how long does a vg30e last
If you keep her in good condition... it is possible to last to almost 800,000 miles. And before people go and try to flame, it has been done already. A local owner here had a 1989 Nissan Pickup with the VG30E motor, Original motor and miles, he traded the truck in at 785,000 miles on it. The motor was rebuilt only twice.
I thought it was kind of BS, but I ran into the guy at the local Nissan Dealer. He has a picture up of him and his truck as he traded it in. There are about 50 people on that wall that have 100,000+ miles on their Nissan... about 10 of which who have passed the 300,000 mile mark.

change the t-belt every 60k or sooner otherwise say bye bye to the valves
I remember seeing a pic on the .org a few years ago of a VG that had over 400k on it.
It seems that if you maintain them properly (oil changes, t-belt changes) they tend to go for a very long time. I think 300k is not unusual for the engine. Arctic is probably right that the tranny is more likely to go than the engine, especially if you have an AT.

i gotta AT VG - 91 - M1 oil and M1 filter every 3000 miles, strict tune ups, change trans seals when they leak, keep fluid level... 180,000 miles now+ and the only thing i've replaced on the engine are the regular tune up parts - the only thing on the trans were the gasket and seals. its got a lot more miles in it - not one speck of trouble so far.
as the tappet bros. say -the key to the miles is the treatment. its up to you to make it last that long. my rule of thumb, if something breaks... is, ****IN CHANGE IT! FAST!

I've been through one and haven't seen anything really go wrong with the engine, just a bunch of other junk. Seems like the engine is one of the more solid points in this case.....to me at least

I can put 200,000 miles on a engine, rebuild it, drive another 300,000 miles, rebuild it again. See where I'm going? I can do this over and over until I hit 1,000,000 miles.
I guess the term "rebuild motor" can be an subjective word.

Original rings, pistons, bearings, cams, lifters, head gasket, etc. External components like water pump, timing belt, valve cover gaskets are considered maintenence items that needs changing when due.

I've got 225,000 miles on my VG and its running awesome. The previous owner was an older gentlemen and the oil changes, timing belt... have always been taken care of. I'm hoping to see a lot more miles out of my engine.

the joys of not having a timing belt

oh, and I don't consider a rebuilt motor worthy of mileage comparison either

the one bad thing about the VG is the auto tranny they suck!!!!

It depends on what kind of driving you do. If it's mostly short trips or a lot of stop and go driving, then 3000 miles is a good oil change interval. My driving is mostly highway, usually at 70 mph with very little stop and go, 40 miles each way to work every day. I change the oil and filter every 5000 miles and don't use synthetic. I took the engine apart a year ago with 230,000 miles on it mainly to fix several leaks and to have a look inside. I found a very clean engine with virtually no measurable wear on the cylinders or bearing surfaces. New bearings, rings and seals and it went back together. It still doesn't use a drop of oil between changes.

I've mentioned this on here before. My girlfriend had a 90 GXE. AT 363,xxx miles reverse went in the tranny. It was the original tranny. The engine still ran quiet and did not smoke however it had a faulty injector making a rough idle. She bought the car when it was 1-2 years old and had under 50k miles on it. I would say it had average maintenance during it's life. It had normal repairs; timing belts, tune ups, and alternator etc. and the only unusual repair she spoke of was a cracked manifold which ran into some money. The car was so severely rusted underneath that I parted the car. I still have the gauge cluster from it. Maybe I can get a pic on here when I get my new PC put together. I think the autos can do just fine if they are maintained and not abused.
