How to Support Engine While Removing Oil Pan?

As the title indicates, I am wondering how you go about supporting the engine while removing the oil pan. There is no ring to hang the engine from (at least on the VG) and I don't want to take any chances while I'm underneath the car. A little help, please?

I'm assuming you don't have access to a hoist, and are trying to avoid buying one.

leave the transmission mounts alone and carefully support the pulley with a wood block.

Hmm...OK I will do that when I get that far. Right now I've hit a snag...How do you get these damn cam seals out? I tried putting the bolt back in to pull the cam out, but it won't move. the FSM says to remove them. Some people said its not necessary to remove the cams, but there is no where to hook the seal puller on to. The crank sprocket doesn't really have much to grab onto and it's no wanting to move either. Help!

I believe some people screw a screw into the seal and pull it out, but becareful not to scratch the journal. I've never done a timing belt on a VG so you'll probably want to wait for someone who has to chime in (Pervis Anathema, Matt, Dan, etc)

Nooo......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My poor VG will never be the same. I gouged the freaking **** out my front cam with a screw. She leaks oil to this day. I highly recommend doing this the Dan way. (IIRC) Go to Sears, buy a pick set. Gingerly use the picks to get the seals out.

Yes, it is a biatch if you have never done it. Yes, it is time consuming and stressful. For the love of God, just don't use a screw.

Yeah, I got a little bit of the cam, but took some permatex and repaired the little bit of damage, making it flush. But it's dinner time, so hopefully you guys can chime in with my next 2 issues while I eat.

1) One of the cam seals got pushed in a bit too deep on one side of it. Is this OK, or will I have to pull it, wait till Monday, and get another one?

2) That freakin' crank sprocket will not come off! I know the seal leaks, but I'm just about ready to say f##k it and forget about it. How the hell can I get it off w/o turning the crank at all? I heated it up and tried to pull it, but no luck.

Oh yeah, one other thing...I broke some cooling system sensor earlier. I will post pics of it later so I can figure out what it is. C'mon guys, I want to put this thing back together!!!

Not sure. One of mine is pushed pretty far back but that is the cam that I scratched. I don't know if the seal being that far back contributes to the leak or not.

Mine was a BITCH to get off. Took hours. I tried prying it off with a screwdriver, heating it... I finally ended up drilling holes in it and taking a steering wheel puller to it. I got a new sprocket from the local dealer for ~$35. You need to change this seal. Just watch out don't score the crankshaft.

1. not sure

2. I had the same problem with my last GXE. What I did was drill a hole on the sprocket on each side of the crank, tapped them with the correct tap for some long bolts I had, used a steering wheel puller to pull it out. Sounds time consuming but it took me all of an hour maybe to do that where I worked for several hours trying to get that sucker out before.

Now that I have a stud welder the next time I have a problem like that I will probably just weld a couple of studs on there and see if I can pull it with the slide hammer lol...not sure if that will work but worth a try.

EDIT: dangit PA beat me to it.

Bringing back this old thread to the origin of its title...Where can you attach a hook to a VG motor? I now have access to a hoist with a hook rigged on a pulley system directly over it. Only problem is, I don't see a place to hook the motor!

Sorry, didn't catch that last part...And I need to suspend it so I can replace the oil pan and EXHAUST MANIFOLD STUDS!

And, Green Max, are you suggesting I wrap a chain around the engine?

Is there a hook point on VEs?

toss a chain around the manifolds and hoist it that way

do the oil pan work, "reinstall" the engine and do the manifolds (or do the manifolds first)

I've never had to pull a VG before so I'm not sure of any other bolt holes. For the VE the first couple I was somewhat hesitant with using the manifolds but it works great (easier to balance, sturdy, etc)

on the VG, i hooked an old seat belt to the upper intake manifold, and it held perfectly......on the VE, i used the exhaust studs.... but you can use the a/c bracket and part of the upper intake manifold also.......you may wanna put a second strap on it for stablility, and for rocking the motor back and forth......

You wanna see redneck? Here's a pic of my buddy's stock car being pushed into the building with the hoist I will be using!

And yes, that building is made out of OSB!

it may work, but it's still ghetto.

but yes, I'm very familiar with the seatbelt-as-a-sling thing. I've gotten my share of engines from junkyards and almost all of them have been hoisted there using seatbelts.
when they get to my house, they get chains though.

I prefer this:

BTW. Never use screwdrivers to remove seals. Just to buy a cheap seal puller.

Did you just wrap the chain arond the engine, Jeff? Because that looks similar to the apparratus I will be using.
