A/C & Ash Tray swap?

OK i have seen a couple pics of people cutting out the ash tray and molding in there stereo and it starting making me think. Does anyone happen to know would it be possible to relocate the AC controls to where the Ash tray is in return mount the stereo where the A/C goes and than i would just put in a LCD screen when the stereo goes? I know it would take a lot of rewiring ( at least extending the wires) and i have no problem with that it's the the whole cable wire for the hot/cold selector that has me scratching my head. Because just eyeballing the A'C area it is about a single DIN size so other than making bracket to keep everything in place i think it would work. Any thought or preferably facts!

Why not fab up a seperate switch for the hot/cold control and relocate the a/c controls or just bypass the hot/cold control all together.

Anything is possible. I once hacked my radio in under the ashtray. (not advisable...)
If you put your HVAC controls where the ashtray was, you'll have to remove the plastic structure that's behind the ashtray and lighter. That's no biggy tho. The cables should work fine as long as they still reach and as long as you secure them like stock - so the cable moves inside the casing (correct) instead of the cable and casing moving together (wrong). If your cables won't reach from the new location, you may have to find longer ones from the wreckers and transplant them to your unit. Wiring is a simple cut and splice procedure if you need more length.
All in all, I'd say the bracket will be the biggest pita. I've done this and it's not simple. You have to make sure the face of the HVAC lines-up with the trim panel on all 3 planes - horizontal, vertical and depth - in order for it to sit level and flush with the trim panel.

I have the automatic climate control, so maybe I'm missing something, but why would the cable height affect how it works? It's just a cable - it pushes and pulls a lever. As long as it reaches and the casing is secured properly, I see no reason it wouldn't work.

to be honest i just don't like how low the stereo is and really the A/C to me does not need to be them most accessible I'll probably just end up switching the stereo and the A/C. you have a DAM good point on matching all 3 planes to give it a good clean look if i did it my initial way. But i don't know I'll have to yank it all off and take a few measurements and see if maybe it would be worth the challenge

if it would create a angle that it would create too much tension for it to freely open and close or for that matter not be accessible anymore to be functional

i have done this. I put the ac controlls where the stero is, and a flip out 7inch lcd screen where the ac controlls WERE. and then my stereo is up under the ac controlls.
dvd player is mounted up under the seat, and my antenna for my tv tuner is mounted under passenger seat. all hiddean away! for the ac controlls no wires need to be cut or exteneded, just lots of playing around and u will need to cut out a peice of metal in the back where a bar is behind the ac controlls if you want to be able so shove any thing in there like a screen, you can use a cage in there, you will need to make the space bigger, so have either a good sharp knife with you or a dremil tool and get to work.
You wil see..

its quite a pain getting that metal out and figureing out what all needs to be cut, but common sense will tell you.
i used a pair of industrial snips, pliars, lots of blood sweat and curse words, and a hammer. getting the ac controlls to sit above the cd player flush is the secret, im still trying to figure that oneout lol, mine looks good, ive had plenty of compliments, but its not good enough for me.

I doubt you'll have any binding issues with the cable.

The best way to work on your bracket, and keep things flush is to take the trim panel and the large plastic console piece out of the car. That way you can easily view things & hold things from behind while you're working it out.

you dunn need to do that man, here's what i did, although there was a time i thought about sticking the stereo where the climate control is. an ashtray and cig lighter are easy things to relocate..

still need finishing touches and to be actually installed in the car though

unfortunately the project has been on hold for about a year now. the trim piece and the touch screen have been collecting dust.. i wish i had my car situation under more control and then i would be able to concentrate on customization. i'll definitely be posting pics when i finally get going on it again.

That sounds like the biggest load of BS I have ever heard. You sound like the kid the that lived down the street from me who used to say he had a nintendo but his mother wouldn't let him take it out of the closet because it might get broken. I have a hard time believing you have even started your "JDM" max project and now you are trading your car. You would be better off sticking with the max and proving us all wrong by finishing it the way you have been saying you are going to. Maybe then you might actually earn a little credibility.

I would have to agree. First you said you sold your screen 'tonight', but it was 'today' when you posted. Second I saw no means of attaching/mounting a screen in the original climate control location. Third I saw a radio mounted in it's original brackets, where the bin would normally be, and the climate control merely set on top of it - not actually mounted - and no apparent means of mounting it. And finally - without seeing it all behind the trim panel, I won't accept your proclamation that you have 'done' this. 'Done' means done. Simply moving stuff doesn't mean it looks good or that it works properly.
If you took those pics, then logic would tell me you would be proud of your achievement and that you would have pics of the completed job as well. If you don't have pics, then chances are you never actually completed the job. Show us pics of the completed set-up..., b4 you sold your screen (tonight) and went back to stock...... and then I'll believe you and give you credit for your accomplishment.

I agree with the low stereo thing... get a remote? :P Then again it is harder to see form the outside in a way, specially if your going to put in a "fancy screen" that thieves owuld want.

I am just not really into the whole screen thing anyway, proves no real world use to me, now if you were oging to go nav screen thats another story sexy AND useful maybe evne one of them carputer things.

Also I hate to sound liek this, but that story does sound fishy, and i love how you are going to trade for a RWD mad drifter x yo. I am getting pretty sick of the whole "americans finnaly cathcing upa nd ripping off japan trends" I imagine you want a 240sx for a rwd also

OK had the day off and i figured I'd attempt this mod. started on this MOD and in no way in HELL could anything fit in that location unless you either:

A. have it stick out at least 4 inches. which would look gay!

B. cut the supporting cross member for the dash and it would still be short a inch or 2 for the wires

if the deck or in his case fold out screen had no wires what so ever it would still be a inch short. and that's with it butted up to the cross member!

So far backNblackj30 you have posted one thing or another that has been crap. You don't have to lie to kick it! It's OK if your max is stock they still look good that way too! And if you want to jump ship to follow a new cool trend have fun.

Besides i was doing that when i was 16 in a 83 cutless only we called it playing in the snow

Wow, This sucks

Okay so I purchased a single din Stereo with a screen that comes up for my Maxima. Wired the thing up and screwed in the stereo in where the two M5 screws line up on the L-Brackets. Problem is, The screen hits the dash and goes back in. So for a while I had the thing screwed in with only two screws to the front of the brackets which looked horrible and put way to much strain on the the screws (not to mention it swiveled, Lol). So I went to home depot and another hardware store to get some longer screws and some spacers for the L-Brackets. Not a bit of difference. I would hate to take out the Dremel, but I am at a loss of what to do. I think the only way to do this right is to get some fabricated stereo brackets, but I saw this AC moving thing and it sounded like a good idea. Too bad its fake. anyways, if anyone has any suggestions I would be all Ears. Thanks.

although I am glad you searched, we have a "newbie" thread for these kind of questions.
I am having difficulty seeing the problem; can you take pics, video? this shouldn't be an issue.
