Alternator Prob

Anybody know why my alternator charges sometimes, and other times it flashes the two magical lights at me? I need to rev the engine above 1k and sometimes 2k to make it charge again and warning lamps go away. This has been goin on for weeks already. I'd think if the alty was dying, it would have died by now? Could this be just a slipping belt? Im not hearing any weird noises from it though so I don't think it can be that. Thanks.

Gotcha Green

It's all I needed to know. Im just a bit stunned since Im always hearing and know from personal experience that once those warning lamps go on, they usually don't go away. Thanks again.

Edit: Man, these alts are quite expensive. AZ wants $130 or something for their Duralast even after core charge. Is this what they normally go for?

Yeah, $131.99.. Don't you subtract the core value from the unit price?

Thanks for rubbing it in our face Kyle

The reman alty they sell at advance is a pos...I've went though 2 of them already...

The first one died 9 months after i put it on...The second one is still on there now [about 1 1/2 years] But the bearing is grinding intermitently on it now...

A Nissan Maxima Alternator in Norway costs 575$. Beat that!

I had mine refurbished, paied 150$ for the removal, refurbishing (beerings, brushes) and reinstall. If I knew it myself, I could probably do the job for a couple of bucks. (Brushes = cheap).

Wow.. Thats something. Around here it's $268, which Im most likely going for. It's only about $40 more then the rebuilt ones, and Im not liking the stories I heard from Green about them.

Dominick Iraggi, Very reputable alternator seller. Tons of people buy High Output alts from him on the car audio boards. This is a new stock one and is pretty cheap. When I get a H/O alt it will be from him or Ohio Generator.

brake and alternator warning lights

Had the same issues with the brake and alternator warning lights coming on at different times. I figured it was the alternator going bad. The manual says to check the belt which I did and found it was a little loose. It wasn't making any noise but it was not as tight as the manual says it should be. Easy fix to tighten up and seems to have stopped the brake and alternator warning lights from coming on. Will need to replace the belt soon since it is a little worn. I think checking the belt is first on the check list for the alternator according to the Haynes manual. Makes sense since the belt stretches as it wears and has less tension.

Thanks for the pointer, but Im pretty sure I read somewhere that you will hear if the belt is loose. It will flap or something of that nature. Either way, my tension seemed pretty tight and the belt was in good condition, so I doubt that was my problem. I'll be installing the new alty tommorrow hopefully, see what happens.

Get a new one and do the job once...My alternator failed last fall and I bought a reman unit from napa. I went thru not one, not two, but three bad alternators before I got them to throw me a new one at the reman price. They are a bit of a PITA to change since they're under the car, but by the fourth time I did it, the whole process took me under 40 minutes using hand tools. Good luck!
