dead ve :(
i bought my brother's 92 ve5 the other night. on my way home, it died. i took off from a stop sign, and about 20 feet after i had the clutch all the way out, it felt like that 'juddering' when you are just taking off, and then it just died. and it wouldnt start again. it turns over fine, but it wont catch. so it is either fuel or spark right? anyone else had this problem? btw it was a rolling stop, and 2nd gear, and grammaing it. i have no idea why it died. i am gonna replace the fuel filter and see what that does. ngk iridium plugs have ~8000 miles on them, if that matters. any help/ideas much appreciated

First thing to do is check the fuel pump, turn the key to the on position, listen for it turning on[it should run for about 3-5 seconds then shut off]
If it is ok then take one of the coilpacks out, stick a sparkplug in it then try to start it while someone is looking for spark...
If there is no spark i would suspect the crank angle sensor being bad...

from the noises you described, I was going to mention timing chain failure being a likely cause. sorry mang, but that engine is toast. www.car-part.com is your next stop.

IMO it is not worth fixing the engine due to the labor and cost involved in fixing the engine....You can find a ve engine in a junkyard for about $400-$800..Swap it out in a day or two, drive happy..vs having to pull the engine[much easier to fix the broken parts with it out],tear the whole top of the engine down, replace the vtc's/chains/most likely the valves/possibly pistons[sometimes valves can crack the top of the pistons when they come together]
Just not worth it to me...

You can add my old 93 VE5 to the list of cars that has done that. From the service records it happened about four years ago, and had an engine with 60K put in to replace it. Now it happened again, with only 110K on the new engine. VTCs were ticking, but nothing too loud. The guy is putting another engine in it, 3 different engines in 223K miles. Now my 92 VE AT had 270K when I sold it on the original engine/tranny with no VTC tick. Weird...

it's the reason I prefer high mileage to low mileage.
low mileage cars normally don't recieve the same maintenance level a high mileage car does.
and on the VTCs the car needs to be running for a while to help keep the oil from gumming up the passages, something you normally won't find in a low mileage car.
