OEM Spoiler Install

Yes, 200th post after over 5 years!

Holy moly, I was at the boneyard today, and scored a black nerfy OEM spoiler that came off clean on the sides, and still had all 4 8mm nut studs in the middle intact, WITH a harness!

Now my question: I have a GXE trunk. Is our brake light system in the back pre-wired for that harness, or am I looking at more intense wire work? Thanks in advance!

i'm sure the wires which go to the rear deck light are the the ones you'll want to redirect to the spoiler...

I dont think it would be prewired, but I could be wrong. If it is, there will be wires running up one of the trunk hinges (drivers side I think). But I think there is also wiring there for the trunk latch switch (to tell if trunk is open).

But like Hectic said, even if it's not pre-wired, it wouldn't be that hard to extend the wiring from your current 3rd brake light. Just two wires there. Crimp new wires to it, run it up the hinge and to the spoiler light.
If you go this route, it might be a good idea to go to the junkyard again and cut the harness out of a SE. This way you'll get the connector so the spoiler wont be hardwired in and can be removed later if necessary. And you can get a couple feet of wiring probably.

Will it would have been easier to just get the whole trunk instead of drilling the holes for the middle and especially the sides...unless you are just going to glue the sides down.

andy044 I have heard that liquid nails is the stuff to use but I have no experience with it.

I posted a mini-writeup about how I did mine. It's a cheap option that works pretty well with some 3M tape or other adhesive.

Oh yeah...back to the topic at hand.....the GXE trunk is not wired for a spoiler if it didn't previously have one. However, like everyone else said it's pretty easy to run some wires. I'm pretty sure you could just splice some wires in from the brake light thats already in your car without trouble. Then you'd have 2 third brake lights, but thats no big deal I guess. At least nobody would rear-end you because they couldn't see you, lol.

oh yeah I forgot that GXEs had the window brake light. DO NOT leave it hooked up with the spoiler light. It looks bad if you do that (attention to detail). So what you do is find where the deck light is plugged up and cut and splice the wires from there.

to re-glue my spoiler down on my 1991 SE, i used liquid nails, and after a full year, it has not started to come up at all......all you have to do is clamp it down hard to the trunk lid...... as with the wiring, i never owned a GXE.. but i would say it isnt wired into the trunk because it was not an option on the GXE....(i think)...but it really isnt that hard to extend your wires to the trunk... i think it may be 2 wires....

What glue do you think would work best to keep the spoiler down?

#1 Gorilla Glue

#2 2500 PSI Epoxy

#3 Liquid Nails

i would go back to the junkyard and get the damn trunklid so that i don't have to drill holes on my existing trunklid.

What did you do to keep it down with the liquid nails? Did you just apply some to the bottom edges, and let it dry with some C-clamps? That's what I'm thinking.

Thanks for the opinions gents. I was thinking double-sided-tape because the ends came off so damn clean. Also, when I saw it at the wreckers, the trunk was not black, and it was dented from the guys working at the wreckers.
