I have relatives with '93 Nissan Maxima GXE (automatic). The vehicle has approximately 121,000 miles on the odometer. They are the only owner of the vehicle. Here is the problem. The temperature guage reads in the normal level until the vehicle reaches 65-70 mph then it gradually increases and doesn't stop until the vehicle is stopped and shut off. Afterwards the coolant resivoir is empty and the engine is very hot (obviously). I haven't had a chance to witness it so I'm not sure exactly what happens or if there is fluid in the radiator. Anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? Thermostat? Experiences? Thanks in advance.

well, if its losing coolant its most likely a bad waterpump, or there could be a leaky hose somewhere. the most likely culprit is the waterpump though.

start simple: Have them check the antifreeze in the tank after the car has had a chance to cool down somewhat. They should be able to see fluid. If not, then they need to add fluid in the tank and then some in the reservoir. If there is fluid in there, then there's a possiblility that some air got introduced in the lines. If that's not it, then as James said, it's likely the waterpump.

Just make sure they do not run it in the hot zone, that will destroy the engine.

Before replacing anything have the radiator checked out to see if it is clogged or if you are loosing pressure. A coolant pressure test would be first and then have the radiator flushed. That would be my first route.

While you are at it.....

Check your hoses as well to ensure they are not leaking around the fittings or have holes in them.
