Auto tranny not shifting.

Hey everyone. I picked up an old 93 max this weeekend. it was free from a friend. The only problem it has is that when you shift in any position, D, R N, it doesn't engage in any gear. Its not a cable cause I jacked it up and linkage is OK. I suspect its something inside.

His doughter was driving it, so she probably shifted while rolling, or something...
Anyways, I've taken apart few manual trannys but don't know much about autos.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be. I plan on dropping it this week and see whats going on.

Thanks

chances are the planetary is trashed or an input shaft.
no matter what it will be a "hard part" which means $$ it'll be cheaper to get a used tranny than rebuild your current one.

Thanks for the responses.

What I also noticed is that when switching between positions, RPMs jump up and down as if it was engaging, just like on the working car.
What I also noticed is when on jacks, I pu it in D, the front wheels started to rotate slightly, then stopped.
Park is working, no prob.

Also, used tranny is about $500-700, and the part should be less. Isn't better to put in a new part.. Though car has 186k miles on it, probably originaly tranny.
Thanks.

the trans cost and availibility of parts is partially dependant on whether you have a DOHC or SOHC motor. the trannies do not interchange because of a starter issue

Are you saying you only have one jack? I don't think it's possible to pull the tranny with out a jack is it

well, the manual tranny on my 00 Max is no problem to pull out, just need some one to help unscrew few bolts while i hold from the bottom. I was just wondering if the automatic is much heavier..

yeah the auto transmission is much heaver than the manual. You will probably not be able to lift it up and put it on without a jack.

Here is what I found out this weekend. While on jacks, I put the shifter in any position and nothing happens. THen i give it a gas, the wheels rotate very little, maybe like 1 rev per second. So anyone has any ideas? Is it the valve body? Torque converter or oil pump. It doesn't feel like there is anything broken mechaniacally.

Thanks

89 Maxima wouldn't shift into 3rd gear.

Gotta question if anyone can help. I was on the highway the other day and my 89 Maxima wouldn't shift into 3rd gear. I kept it at 55mph to be safe and the rpms went all the way up to 5. I then parked it for about 45 minutes and now it's fine? Any ideas. Thanks
P.S. It's an auto tranny with 140,000 ,miles.

nicks 79...ive had a torque converter strip out where the input shaft goes in it .i got a new one for like 200 bucks and some seals and learned the hard way how to r and r a trans, the shop said its a common prob, this might be why the wheels barely spin only off ground, have someone shut the motor off while you listen around the bell housing.. i could hear my converter spinning in there a few revolutions, kinda scraping .when i pulled the trans i let the fluid outta the converter and looked in with a light .tilt it if the fluids in the way, mine was obviously chewed up

Not 100% on where they are located since I never installed it. It was $125 new, I'll sell it for, say, $60.
