Exhaust Question

Ok, so I recentley put a 2.5" straight pipe from the flex pipe to muffler on my 90 Maxima SE. I obviously also put an aftermarket muffler on. When I accelerate hard or rev above 4 grand, it gets that "bees in a can" sound. Would this be caused by the flex pipe? It's the original 16 year old one that came with the car, so I was gonna replace it eventually anyways. If and when I do this, I want to get a decent replacement. ANybody know of an affordable flex/y pipe? Oh yea, also, do you think the car will still pass inspection without the cat? Cause it did with flying colors the last time with the original cat, and you could smell the sulfur coming out of that thing from a mile away lol. Thanks in advance.

The lack of a resonator will cause the"bees in a can" sound...

Get a warpspeed Y pipe, it will give you some extra hp, prolly more than u gained from removing the cat... as for inspections, isnt it illegal to remove your cat?

well I am not a tree hugger thats for sure but I do think all you guys that have taken the cat off need to put it back on.

Here are a couple of reasons:

1. it is proven that you dont make any more power without the cat.

2. the car will sound funny and smell bad (gas smell like its running rich)

3. the cat does help the environment.

4. it will not pass inspection in a state that checks.

I dont have inspections here in MS and I ran a 2.5" exhaust without a cat only because the shop ordered the wrong size. They put a resonator they had in stock in place of the cat for the time being. I never went back and had the cat put in though because the car pretty much sat after that.

I recently decided to put that exhaust on my current 93 so I bought a cat and smaller resinator and just finished welding it all up last night.

My car was too loud even with the larger resinator plus it stank bad so I will be glad to have the cat back on.

Just trust me...put the cat back on.

What ebay do you use? I found several on there and thats just from one manufacturer.

I just got the Magnaflow which is made by Carsound. I got Magnaflow part number 94106 2.5" cat.

Summit racing is a good place
to buy parts as well. A little higher than Ebay most of the time but a good company.

Removing the catalytic converter is a waste. It has been proven that you gain about 1 hp from the test pipe when compared to a quality "high flow" cat (like Magnaflow). Plus you don't only have to worry about inspection time. I have had an officer look under my car before just to see if I had one. I am glad that I do. Is a ticket worth 1 hp?

Just buy a complete exhaust from Warpspeed. You will get the y-pipe, a high-flow cat, a muffler, and the rest of the piping. And it will all be good quality. Then you don't have to worry about getting caught without a cat.

Plus if you get caught the state will check out where you got inspected, They will get fined and you wil get fired.

Hello Guys! I was just reading and since I'm planning to take my Maxima to the shop to fix a exhaust leak I think I'll upgrade to the warpspeed Ypipe, i was just wondering if it's true that it won't pass the Smog Check (Live in CA) after installing this Y pipe.

The cat is the most important part of passing those test. IIRC the y pipe doesnt hurt your chances since it just frees up the flow to the cat a bit.

I got rid of my resonator and installed a Vortex Classic muffer. Its a muffler meant for classic muscle cars, but it sounds niiiiice on my VG. Deep tone at low RPMs and a almost muscle car-ish growl when ya step on it. Kinda like a mix between a Magnaflow and a Greddy.

um... just do it yourself. just jack up your car and soak the bolts with some rust remover/penetrating stuff and go at it.

Either way I wouldn’t pay more than 50 bucks for that job.
