shudder when in reverse.
Tranny problem? I got a shudder from the front of my 1992 gxe auto when I reversing the other day. Also when I'm cruising at around 50-60mph my rpm flucuate +-500rpms. what could be the problem/fix. I praying its not my tranny. help.

one thing I forgot to add. I ran the tranny diagnostic using the shifter and etc.
Everything came back ok. no trouble codes. My y-pipe is broken, I'm still waiting on warpspeed to send my new y-pipe. Can a broken exhuast pipe affect the car in that way?

I haven't done a tune-up yet, but don't think thats the problemI noticed the car takes a while to change into the next gear. when I step on the gas, the engine races for a couple of seconds then i jumps into gear.
does anyone know of any good tranny shops like Aamco or Remco?

As for tranny shops I have never like the fast food style shops. I would look in the phone book to see if you have a tranny guy that just does imports and better yet Japanese impots you will get your best work from them
In Denver there are a few shops that just work on Toy's, Hoda's etc.

Check your transmission fluid level. It may be low. When I had my transmission flushed a couple of years ago and noticed a shudder when shifting gears. The tech didn't refill the transmission fluid all the way. After I added a few more pints, it was fine again.
As for the RPM fluctuation, it sounds like your torque convertor is not locking up. I had this problem with an 85 Honda Accord many years ago around 92K miles Since the car worked fine otherwise, I just kept driving it. At 130K miles, the transmission failed completely (it would slip out of gear, occasionally then I lost reverse).
After $1400 at Best Western Transmissions (this was in Colorado), the transmission was rebuilt and shifted fine again. This was the first auto I had and I never bothered to change the ATF. I paid the price.
When I had my 88 camry, I had this problem as well as the torque convertor would not lock up around 110K miles. I changed the ATF (did so regularly), but did not fix the problem. But strangely, the problem fixed it self around 130K miles as the torque convertor started to lock-up again out of the blue.
To check your tranny level, the car must be warm and running (idling) to get an accurate reading.

I have had my Y-pipe and one muffler broken for about a year. And I use the car, a lot.
And I have a reverse problem but is not the same. It takes a while to put the gear, and sometimes it doesn't put it at all. But it makes the piiiii piiii piiii sound. I look like an idiot making all the sound of going backwards and the car doesn't move

this sounds more like and engine issue rather than a tranny prob...
be careful with flushes and tranny drains/refills...they are temp fixes and not actual repairs for what caused the situation in the first place.

2 Questions...
This morning my car died when I hit the first stop sign.
It would crank up fine in park but as soon as I put it in any gear (except 'N' of course) it would die.
Kind of like the Tranny was fighting with the brake and the brake won (killing the engine).
After messing with it for about 10min. it magically fixed itself and runs fine! Is my car haunted?
Great info in here BTW!
Gonna try the tranny diagnostic thing, fix my shifter bushings and change the ATF fluid next chance I get

Almost the same thing happened... Again...
O.K. so this morning it made it to the second stop sign before it died.
(See previous post)
I let it sit in park for a while and warm up... Then it's fine (knock on wood ;~)
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
