VG Oil Filter??

Hi. Time for another oil change tomorrow morning, but I had a quick question concerning oil filters. I heard a while back I should get a Toyota Filter? Rather than OEM; but was wondering if anyone could tell me if that's true, why, and if it's a good place to start for a slightly clacky engine (other than the obvious) If not... what filter would be good to use?

Thanks in Advance...

ps. Checked Stickies, and don't have search option... sorry if this is......

Dude, it's in the sticky at the top of the page. That only applies to VE engines...You have a VG, which means you need to go to Napa and get yourself a "Napa Gold" oil filter...and a gallon of Castrol GTX. Have you not bought an oil filter previously?

Hey. Yeah I saw the sticky for the VE alternative, but that wasn't really what I was talking about. I've gotten Oil filters before too, but there's always the crap filters (Fram) and then the better filters. (?)

I was just wondering what brand of filter for the VG was good, and would reduce clacking noise from the engine... And I thought I remembered hearing something about Toyota filters for the VG as well, not just for fitment issues as I guess it is used for the VE, but because it was quality made.

Thanks for the help...

either pureONE or bosch for my vg. schucks has some good combo deals for oil + bosch. the other day i picked up 6 qts of pennzoil full sytnthetic + a bosch filter for only $12. surprisingly, before i bought my ve i had went to walmart and bought a $2 filter with fin construction and anti drainback valve. originally i was just being cheap and bought it for the vg. I hadn't gotten around to changing the vg's oil before I bought the ve, so I figured might as well install it in the ve because it had the ADBV and amazingly it worked great. the small amount of vtc tick it had beforehand went away by using a measly $2 filter. previous owner had a crappy fram filter installed here's a pic of the $2 walmart filter:

The Toyota oil filter for the VE isn't going to work for the VG because it's too small. If you've ever done an oil change on the VG, there's that long stem you got to stick into the filter middle before threading in. This stem would get in the way as it is taller than the Toyota oil filter.

As for the tapping at start-up, it's either caused by broken exhaust manifold studs, or it's just the engine building oil pressure to get the oil up into the valve area. Just make sure your oil level is topped off and don't worry too much about the noise.

*sigh* To clarify:

I wasn't talking about THE ve Toyota filter, I just thought that the toyota filter was more quality made. I went ahead and tried out the supertech and 5w-30 oil and it seemed to quiet it down a lot. My Exhaust manifold looks almost new, It's scary really... all really stiff feeling.

pfff, I use Fram Tough Guard oil filters with Castrol GTX 10w30 All year round.. Fram isnt bad for VGs..or is that whats making my car sound like that in the cold?

Should I use 5w30 this oil change or just keep using 10w30 since my car is ticking for the first 5 seconds after cold start ups?

depends on which toyota filter you're referring to. Toyota actually cheapened their oil filters for certain models. so it's not recommended to seek the VG version of the toyota filter (if there was one out there).

here are some of the better filters...
mobil1
napa gold/Wix
bosch

bang for the buck goes to Napa gold.

if you want to buy a decent amount of them so you'll have the filters on hand go to http://www.fleetfilter.com/

the shipping works out better if you buy more.
