Stalls And Safemode

I have discussed this before in another thread. My 91 Maxima stalls frequently at low speeds and surges at higher speeds. It seems to go into safemode before it stalls as it doesn't rev past 2000rpm. Question: where can I locate the eccu(computer) and does it use lights on it so that I can diagnose the problem without an external code reader. I do have the codes from http://torquespecs.tripod.com/maxima_85-91_codes.htm . I don't have the money for the dealer to "tinker" with it. I just changed the fuel filter and have tried high octane fuel and injector cleaner twice all with minor success. The engine light never goes on until it stalls and it can take a few attempts to restart and often only in safemode, then like a miracle, it restarts again with full power for about 3 min. Sometimes I have gone for hours without stalling, next time, every few minutes. I was going to check out the MAF sensor but it doesn't seem to disconnect very easily. If the MAF is disconnected, does it not go into safemode automatically anyways? I just need to know where the computer is for now, thanx.

just so you know, the MAF is the same for all 3rd gens, regardless of engine.

You might also want to look through the 3rd gen parts classifieds. There are usually a couple of people parting a car that will sell one.

Thanks Cliff and Mygreen, I have checked the eccu and lo and behold....it's the MAF, just like you said. I will probably be using ebay on this one because of no credit card and a paypal account being active. The one out here is $80plus tax at the wreckers untested. Thanks again

On the MAF, I had the same problem with my car when I first got it, wouldn't go past 2000 RPMs, replaced MAF and it was all better
