Yeah... I guess a lot has to do with appeal too. Toyota's never really did anything for me, the V6 Camry's that competed with the Max's back in the day were just kinda blah, even when I see a nice one... Nissan has always been good at that I think, and they do make an exceptional product in my book... the VG/VQ Engines are EXTREMELY good engines along with several of the older 4 cylinders. Hell... I'd take my Max over any Ford (within reason) Anyday... just because I love it. But I know for a fact Ford's aren't crap and I gotta back it up. Just like when the guys over on the f150 forum bash the titans

well part of my brother's problem with his Toyota is.. he knows NOTHING about cars. if I told him to change his 'spark plug fluid' he'd ask me how much it cost to do that. he paid for all his repairs from the factory dealer or a tranny shop. $250 for a single front right brake line. $300 apiece for two front window regulators. $400 for a distribitor coil. $whatever for a battery, which exploded and messed up his engine bay. $cheap for a radiator hose that someone else put on for him (one of just 2 non-pro repairs). $1800 for a rebuilt tranny installed. $25 for plugs which I installed. cut a tire down, bought a new one. put 2 nails into another tire... got that plugged.

just think how much less he'd have spent if he let me do more on his car... he's just scared about it. and look what it's cost him. I told him to ask for a manual when his auto shredded itself. but he's a loser and won't touch a stickshift with a 10 foot pole. i'll get him in mine once i swap.. eventually

You should also take into consideration that ford has been making cars for over 100 years, where as nissan/datsun has been making them for half that or even less in the US

But with that said, there is no one manufacturer that has a perfect reliability rating, as said earlier its all about personal prefernce and appeal. We all obviously find the Maximas appealing to us or we would not be here.

Who's to say their survey is even close to real world results?

I know this thread has gone way off topic but.... I work in a shop and in all honesty it seems that most trucks domestic and foreign seem to be failry reliable and should make it to 200K without any major issues. Domestic sedans on the other hand...... Lets put it this way I had a '90 Honda Accord that I traded in with 199,996 miles and it still ran and drove great. Only things replaced were CV joints, and a timing belt. Don't ask why but I got a Malibu. In the one year I had it the dealer replaced 2 power windows, starter, fuel sending unit, A/C control unit, 2 sets of struts and at 39K miles the motor was pulled. Some people say oh u must have got a lemon. We get V6 GM sedans all the time for motor work. Usualy a bad lower intake gasket causing oil and coolant to mix. Chryslers cars (not trucks) almost always issues with the power windows, ac, or transmission. And by the way the only thing I miss about the Malibu is that since it was at the dealer getting fixed all the time I don't get to drive nice new rentals anymore.

dude, thats why people refer to consumer reports. They do the real world tests. Come on

There's no point in arguing which cars are best in a Nissan Maxima site. Its like beating a dead horse, but thanks dude from florida for that article. I didn't know that.

CR is a biased magazine, they've screwed us several times before with what were supposed to be reliable products, turns out long term they weren't.

But to put some reality in the ford argument.
Ford FWDs are the problem, The Trucks are actually fairly durable. which if you read back through this arguement is what is being said. The taurus/contour/escorts are being called unreliable and the trucks are being called durable.

My friend has 2 Consumer reports annual books on his desk. It is funny if you read about a couple of cars they are rated a Consumer Report Best Buy. But then when you look at the details of the car in the back of the book some of them said the "Best Buy" vehicle had higher than average cooling, braking and electrical problems.... SO don't assume CR's word is good as gold.
