I got a new HU and kept my bose speakers. You have to adjust the gain, but once you do, it sounds good. Got it at wal-mart for about $17!
PS...not sure that this answers you question, though

Yes, that looks right, it will get you the 2 Ohms you are looking for.
As for the resistor, you could probably get the proper load that way, but I have it in my mind that it is going to have an effect on the sound quality. I'm almost certain of it, just can't recall exactly what it would do, or why, but I know that I've heard it will cause some sort of problem.
If it were me, considering the difference in price between a decent head unit, and a pair of basic speakers, I would NOT risk burning up the HU just to save some cash on speakers. Besides, the speakers are the most important part of the system, that is where you should be spending most of your money, not on the HU.

John,
Pretty impressive the Bose lasted that long! I have a 93 SE and had to replace the Bose system after about 3 years because it kept eating my cassette tapes so I had a friend install a JVC system with 6-CD changer in the trunk. The Bose speakers crashed a few years later which I've since replaced with Infiniti speakers from Circuit City. But now the CD player's laser is out so I just use a portable car CD-player because, like you, I'd rather not spend more than necessary at this point. Good luck with it!
