It might be possible to replace the cable, but I think that the easiest way to fix this is to replace the regulator. They go for around $70 through the local parts stores, perhaps a bit less on the net, but avoid the ones on Ebay, I've heard some bad things about them here. You should be able get it in yourself in less than an hour, it isn't a really hard job.
new regulator is $40
my time is worth spending the $40 and getting it done in 30 minutes

Get a new regulator from internetautomar. $40. I've fixed them before and it is a pain in the **** and they will eventually fail again because the plastic is old and brittle. Get a new one.
It is not really a pain in the *** at all. If you can manage to get your door panel off quickly, the rest of the job is just taping the window up and unbolting/re-bolting in the new regulator. I guarantee there are no "wires" you need since regulators come with cables. Anyway, here is a good how to link:

I believe that bhunter was referring to replacing the drive cable in the old regulator as being a pain in the ***, and I'll agree. I messed around with mine for a bit before I bought the new regulator. It isn't worth the work to replace the drive cable, because the plastic bits are going to be old, and brittle, and are going to break (if they aren't broken already), so if you're in there to do the work, you might as well put in a new regulator, which is a lot easier job, and will last a lot longer.
