I have a '89 Maxima. I haven't driven it in almost a year because it started slipping a gear. I immediately thought it was the transmission. After calling around for a estimate, I found the transmissions to be quite expensive. Some people didn't even want the job.
Anyway, in January, took my car to Aamco. They had my car for not even an hour before calling me saying I needed a new transmission and I was looking at $1800-$2400. Sorry, I said, too much over my budget. A Aamco across town gave me the estimate of $1200-$2000. So I towed it back home.

Anyway, found a mechanic who was a friend of a friend and he looked at the car. Found out one of the gear switches (right word?) on the transmission was burned out. Put it in and now the car works fine! This cost me $300. Better than paying $2000 for transmission.

So.....the point of my story is....why the HELL did Aamco say I needed a new transmission????? Could they not have found this burned out switch???? No, of course not. They just wanted to rip me off! They probably didn't even look at my car. Since taking it to them, people have been telling me that Aamco does that a lot. That if you take your car in there, they will tell you you need a new tranny whether you need one or not.
I am going to write them a letter about this. There is no telling how many people they rip off.

So BEWARE of Aamco!!

Slipping gears

My car would slip down a gear if I let off of the accelerator real quick or stepped on the brake too quickly.
I never had a problem with it cutting off.
I could still drive it up and down my driveway.
The last time I drove it it was hesitating real bad.
So I parked it and its been sitting there up until last week. Now my car is fixed and I 'm on my way to pick it up. Yea!!!!!

Aamco sucks!

You probably had the inhibitor switch replaced. This switch is somthing that needs to be manualy set, so that when you select a gear your tranny computer will know whats been selected.

I dont think if your inhibitor switch is bad it's going to cause your car to shut off when going over bumps....then again I could be wrong. The inhibitor switch is a part of the gear shift selector.

When I had my inhibitor switch replaced, the problem I was having was when I put the car into drive it wouldn't go anywhere...I had to tap the gear shift down a little and then it would go. Basically my gear shift was off (out of alignment) with the selections I would make..also my car wouldn't start because it wasn't reading that it was in Park. I had to tap it to make sure it was pushed up all the way.
