i've been thinking about this for a while and today my brother was looking at this honda site and told me to try this homemade cai. this was done on a del sol, but same idea applies. http://www.teamdelsol.com/frameset.htm go to the "how-to" section and then the "make your own cold air intake" i've been hearing some guys around here talk about using pvc pipe and i wasnt too fond of that idea but i'd like to try this one. i think it looks pretty nice, not what i'd expect from being homemade. what do you guys think? i think i'm gonna try to do it directly to the throttle body and replace that goofy black tubing, any suggestions on all those sensors? can i just drill a hole in the piping and put them in there like on the site or will that mess something up? anybody know where in the fender the place racing cai rests? and what about the ecu? any input and suggestions would be appreciated. i think i'll try to do my friends civic first before i try mine to get an idea of it.

Pvc isn't my first choice. But, being bored waiting on luandry, I decided to check the claim that pvc will melt and burn. http://www.ciafirestop.com had some info. about pvc. I know this is stupid, but, I didn't think pvc burned as easily as the dude said in the mod. write up. It is still probably too thick though, either way.

do you think place racing will send me the template and instructions without buying the cai? and use 3" piping? and how did the coralla turn out that you were talking about on the other bbs?

umm...tell PR you ordered it from cattman or something and you never got it...they won't know or check into it...if not...lemme know and ill dig around for the stuff that came with mine (it's all relatively the same)..
the corolla turned out awesome...looks very clean like it was professional (ill see if i can get some pics)...it is a cali spec corolla so its slow as *****...he went from a ractive intake which helped in the high end to the CAI which has seemed to improve pick up and power across the powerband...

Metal vs. PVC
One advantage of the PVC over the metal is the fact that PVC won't let the air inside the tube get as hot as the metal would. The metal piping would defeat the purpose of having a CAI b/c by the time the air wiped around to the intake, it'll be hot b/c of the metal piping it went through to get there. Just a thought. Tell me how your project comes out.

Sensors and DIY piping
Hi James,
I would like to recommend you to buy tested CAI piping and not to play with your own design. MAF is very sensitive to the point of it's installation. Install it unproperly and your ECU will receive distorted measurements.
Also I'm sure that DIY CAI may sound like a horn or a big snake. The intake pattern and material greatly affects the intake sound.
Good luck,
DDD

i'm gonna try painting it with ceramic paint or whatever they used on the site. it keeps it cool (or so the guy says). i wouldnt do it if the air would be hot. i'll still try it though. and the design would be just about the same as the place racing design. not much i could do to mess up the airflow, it's pretty much a straight tube until it reaches the fender. the only bend would be in the fenderwell. i just need to know where in the fender it lays and thats why i e-mailed them. so the only problem i might have is the pipe heating up and i'm gonna try painting it with ceramic paint and if that doesnt work i'll try wrapping it. i'm gonna dyno this when i'm done and see if i get any results and see how hot the tubing gets. if i'm not happy by then i'll just spend the $200 on the place racing cai. but hopefully this works and i spend $60-70 at the most.
