Vtc failure or not?

Hi I did a search and I didn't find anything that was of use to me. So here I am. My friend is buying a 1991 SE and he is sure that it has got a twin cam. He told me it was a VG30DE for a start. There isnt such an engine I dont think? He was telling me about it and then went on to say that he wasn't happy with the ticking that it made for the first minute or so when it was started from cold. I said was it like the tappests were all out or like an exhaust leak? He said it was like tappet noise. He thinks that because the motor was steam cleaned that some water got into the injectors and they are making the noise. Anyway, I am damn sure it will be the VTC. Do you guys know of any links that explain why the VTC stuffs up and what needs to be done to fix it. I know this topic will have been discussed a million times here, but like I said, the search didnt reveal much. Thanks from New Zealand

wrong engine

Well man your friend does have a single cam.. the VG30DE is the SOHC. The VE30DE is the engine w/ the twin cams... which is on the 92 and 94 SE's... And the the the POS VTC. Which im suffereing from right now... But the power makes me happy.

if he does have the SOHC engine, it's actually VG30E not VG30DE

could be different where you are, but here in the states, 89-91SE and 89-94GXE have VG engine and only 92-94 have VE engine; check out the FAQ on the main page for VTC info
from talking to other aussies, I dont think they have anything besides the VG for the 3rd gen so I would assume that NZ would be the same, but I'm not sure

theres a good pic of a VE engine on my page (link in my sig) for him to compare to
