Good bye crankshaft.

Well I was stumped for a little while, I heard a little chattering sound, esp. on WOT. Looks like I retired this motor just in time. Happy 200,000 miles to it though Can't complain.

The gear actaully had 15-20% play, that explaines the trouble getting it timed right.

Yikes..

This might explain why some members have trouble getting their timing to stay in the right place..

Sucks, you don't sound too upset though. What's the score? What's next?

Another vg motor is being put together. Nothing crazy, fresh seals, rebuilt heads, and all the bolt ons swapped over. I'm going to try a different intake, I'm maybe 1-2 months away from have it running again, I'll have something up about it then.

What would casue that exactly? Improper install? Appears that the crank itself has some damage where the moon pin is inserted?

I can't see how it could be installed wrong. I think it was mostly the torque and working against spinning the pulley just wore the crap out of the pin and made it dig into the shaft.

Warping the shaft like that Caused the pulley wobble I had in the past.

The newer motor will have a light under drive pulley, so it would be impossible for this to happen again.

Wow that crank shaft is pretty FUBAR'd.

Was the timing belt pully loose? I know mine wasn't when I changed my timing belt and that sucker wasn't coming off.

Thats also common on 89-90 miatas, and the end of the crank will even break off in extreme cases. Usually though the timing retards so far the valves hit the pistons.

I believe the "moon pin" is called a Woodruff Key, technically...

Had something similar on mine, caused by a combination of issues, firstly the previous owner had installed a woodruff key which was far too small, then after time the main pully bolt came slightly loose, which allowed the pully to 'wobble' on the key, by the time I tracked down the cause of the noise, it had damaged the edge of the keyway on the crank, but fortunatly only the top edge, once I fitted the correct size key, it sat properly down into the keyway (where there was no damage), and has been fine ever since.

Let me know if you have a pic of how a normal Max's crankshaft look like. I'm currently Googling it and getting cars that isn't a Maxima and even predates a it. (Like 57 Chevys, etc)

Before I get flamed, I mean from goon's picture point of view

The inner notch just looks exactly like the outer notch. Goons problem is just the left side (our POV) is worn from a weak woodruff key, or something like that I don't remember the exact cause of the problem. Might be a loose main bolt not sure...
