Engine humming problem
Engine humming problem
There is a loud humming or rumbling coming from my engine. Not really loud but noticeable. I was told that it could be my ac compressor or belts rubbing. Has anyone else had that problem, what was it and how much did it cost to get fixed.

My VG engined 90 SE has a hum coming from the engine that wasn't there before. I don't think it's the belts rubbing, as my buddy and I pulled all three accesory drive belts and changed them when we replaced the cam seals, front main oil seal, water pump, thermostat, and timing belt. Hum still there. I'm not worried about it, but think it's probably coming from the alternator or power steering pump. Neither of which you have any recourse as they go out. I'd say just wait till it goes out before changing them if that's the cause. When the AC switch is off, the clutch in the AC compressor normally disengages the compressor so there is no load on the system. You can actually spin the compressor pulley when the belt is off of it.
