Electronically 3rd gens do not need the catalytic converter, though from an emissions standpoint, you do. The ONLY thing taking the catalytic converter out will do is give you an annoying noise, a slight loss of low end power, and you'll be letting off way more toxic gases into the air.

Do us and our children a HUGE favor and leave the cat on the car...We will breath alot easier if you do this, please..

I want to say stock Diameter is 2". I think performance catalytic converters are a waste of money for what they are worth. If you're modding your car on a budget, there are so many other places I would start with rather than worrying about the catalytic converter... unless you have a very high pressure exhaust system (Boosted-- in some way) then most of the stock configuration is acceptable with the exception of the Y-pipe.

If, later on you decide you want to go with a performance exhaust, Greddy and Warpspeed both make cat back systems for our cars. Warpspeed also makes high flow catalytic converters.

But if you want my opinion, I think the VE-5 in full working order has some pretty beastly high end, I would work more on getting the engine to spin a bit faster so you can utilize it first, before running a 2.5" full exhaust system on a 3.0 Liter car-- torqueless much?

"Go" Mods I have done, and am in the process of doing:

Custom Cold Air Intake (Into front bumper)
Warpspeed Y-pipe
ASP Underdrive Pulley
Advanced Ignition Timing
5-spd Intake Manifold Swap-- phenolic Intake Spacers (with power valve)
New KNOCK sensor may be important
ACT Stage 1 Clutch
Stillen Short throw shifter
Fidanza Flywheel

I think the fidanza, Y-pipe, and Underdrive pulley are probably very worthwhile mods for the VE.

Dont forget to advance the timing 1-5 degrees but be sure to ALWAYS USE 93 OCTANE (PREMIUM) thats the cheapest fastest way to get a lil' bit of "pull"

1. the cat doesn't hurt performance
2. straight pipe will hurt performance

what is the purpose of the power valve anyway.

Stock VE-5's have it, you don't have to worry about it. You have a variable intake manifold with a power valve that opens up somewhere near 3500rpms (Meaning greater high end)

Auto's didn't come with it, so I'm swapping it over.

okay this is a little late but this is in my feild.
i've owned a acura legend.
1990 ls 2.7 161hp/162lbs tq.
the 2.5 was 10 hp and tq less.

and yes the legend is slower than the maxima...the vg model that is.
just becuase a car has more hp/tq does'nt always mean that it could win.
i mean i was able to take out my friends 93 bonneville ssei supercharged, and another friend with a 2nd gen legend and i have a VE AUTO.

the maxima is a nice car but like any car these babies has to be maintained.
my ve had a bad spark plug one bad spark plug and when floored the engine would bog sometimes die.

thats how picky the ve's are lol!

VE's are usually almost always faster than VG's... Stock Vs. Stock

Not if you put the 190hp engine in the lotus, then run it with a 160hp lotus.

you said no matter how you slice it. I sliced it differently.
BTW gearing and final drive ratios make a LOT of difference too

OK..Since you like to read more into my posts then whats there..LET ME MAKE IT MORE CLEAR FOR YOU!

Equally matched cars in size/weight/gearing/body design/skilled driver..One with a 160hp engine, and the other with a 190hp engine..which car would come out on top? yeah..

Meh, I said almost always because a lot of times VE's aren't in proper running order; the ratio to VG's and VE's running correctly on the street, my guess VG's would be higher. My VG would wipe the floor with my VE when I first got the VE, but it was running like poop. And from how he phrased it, it sounded like he meant VG max's were faster than VE's.

AND!

the ratio of VGs has to be higher because it was used in ALL GXEs and half(roughly) of SEs.

camry I presume.

I'd take a blown HG over a snapped timing belt or blown tranny (honda or VG your choice on that)
