Well, I am new to the DOHC scene, but I got it from an expert that drives a green max (wink, wink) that this was in fact my issue. He has had his long enough to know what it sounds like, so I trust him. = Wayne. LOL

oil pressure questions always clear out a room

i just grounded my VTCs out yesterday, the clack is(was) new to me.
It went away for me thankfully.

Im kicking myself though, cause i do believe its my own fault.. i used Amsoil synthetic oil last time i changed, its been awhile.. i let it stay in since its rated for 25k miles or 1 year. Yea, sure thats ok for a brand new engine, but not a 92'.. ooops.
Oil change tomorrow, back to mobil 1 synth.. though ive heard synth is bad for an old engine, to thin. Reg oil is thicker and fills in the worn spaces better.. so ive heard at least. IDK

Actually, 92 max is right, it may be just tensioners, or just the vtc's, or both..Point is, do not do one, without doing the other..

i have heard both sounds before.
which is why i knew i had vtc clatter.

when my dad had his 95 240sx se he had a loose t-chain.
when he first started it up it would rattle not like nvtcs where it almost sound as though the engine was going.

but once warmed up it goes away.

Do you see this button on the right hand side of the page?..if so..press it the next time you want to reply to a specific post. It makes it hard for us to decipher your posts when you don't use it.

Thanks

I believe my tensioners were the culpret of my clacking. I found the tensioner wouldn't pump up properly (internal leak?) to take the slack out of one of my timing chains. It was quiet when the car was cold (fast idle, thick oil). Then when the engine heated up and the oil thinned out and the engine was idleing was when I heard the clacking. I did the test in the TSB to test the VTC's and didn't get an obvious answer from it (my clacking was intermitant). Therefore I bought the VTC repair kits and did the VTC's and also did the tensioners, based upon the TSB test results. I didn't want to have to do the job all over again when I got it back together.
