Rubbing sort of sound

I did a search and found a few topics that asked a similar question, but they didn't offer a definitive answer.

About a week ago I started hearing a constant rubbing sound...which would go away whenever I accelerated or braked. If I was just coasting it would be a constant sound, almost like the sound you would get from putting a card in bike wheel spokes. I thought it was my brake pads (it had been a while since I replaced them) and when I replaced them today there were low...not terribly low, but at max they were 1/3 the thickness of the pads that replaced them. Anyhoo...after I replaced the pads everything was dandy....for a bit; after maybe 10 minutes of driving the sound came back...much quieter, but it was definitely the same noise. I wouldn't think it'd be my rotors because they still look fairly new (had them replaced last time I took my car into the shop) and look to be smooth. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

my thought is it may be a warped rotor,or buildup, tapping a brake pad. check for trueness of rotors with a straight edge or a ruler, check for buildup on them, and inside your drums(if applicable.)

check the rotor as benstoked suggest, I would also suggest checking the following:

-dragging brakes
-dust shield rubbing against brake rotors
-drive belts
-pulleys
-tires to see if they are bent
-wheel bearing.

The last two should not create the (card in the bike spoke) noise, but they do create a constant wobbling noise.

I suspect its the rear brakes though. Just have a hunch.

Well, I had a chance to check everything out this weekend and here's what I found:

The good:
- Brakes were fine / aligned correctly
- Rotors are smooth and not warped
- Drive belts and pulleys look brand new still (the original owner had them replaced right before she traded in the car for a new Camry ...I'm the second owner)
- Tires and rims are straight (rotated, balanced, aligned, etc when I had two of them replaced not too long ago)

The not so good:
- The front left dust shield looked fine from the outside, but when I looked at it from behind there was a portion that was a bit loose and nudging up against the rotor.

After a little tightening, no more rubbing sound.
