Bump stops
Bump stops
I've been getting conflicting reports about the bumps stops in our cars along with Eibach ste ups. I was told by a mechanic that my car doesn't even have bump stops. I did my own springs and don't remember seeing anything discribed by other owners in my suspension. Could someone post a diagram (or location specific picture) of where this equiptment is located.

If I recall correctly, they are part of the strut boot which is attached to the upper spring seat below the strut mount, inside of the spring and around the upper portion of the strut shaft. And yes, they work to serve as a barrier against which the strut body strikes on hard impacts before it bottoms out. The problem with them can be that they are too long and therefore crack due to hard and frequent impacts. Some people (here or elsewhere, I'm not sure) have addressed the problem by trimming them to be shorter, so that they will take less impact and be less likely to crack, and have also drilled holes in them to make them softer. I don't know if this is necessary or advisable with our cars. It seems to me that those who have modified them thus have had cars (like the Sentra Classic SE-R) that have had seriously lowered suspensions and/or troubles with shortened suspension travel. You can get good boots with included bump stops from Internetautomart here on the .org.
Hope that helps.

Ok I looked unerneath the car and I see something like a rubber sleave around the shaft on one side and nothing on the other side. Now should I be looking to add some aftermarket ones or just eliminate the one I have to smoothe out my ride.
I'm sittin on Eibachs my boy said he had a 1.2 drop but my car looks lower than his. 1.2 is the lowest drop for them tho. Right?
i think it's a little more than 1.2,..regardless the drop will be more on an auto compared to a 5spd. also age of the springs will determine how much more drop. older springs have slightly more sag to them.
DO NOT REMOVE YOUR BUMPSTOPS!!!!!
I don't care what any other ricer told you. DO NOT remove them. They're there for a reason.
Guys with lowered cars my want/need to trim the stock stops a little bit, but don't remove more than about 1/2" or so.
The reason these are there is to prevent the car from bottoming out the shocks and to prevent the front end of the car from slamming into the ground.
There's also tons more reasons that get into handling and more technical suspension theory involving spring rates and such. I won't bother you with that (you can search for it yourself if you choose), but suffice it to say removing your bumpstops is asking for trouble.... ESPECIALLY if you have Konis.
been there, done that, got to buy a new pair of front Konis because they bottomed out and I ruined them.
